If you're in the Kalamazoo area and looking for ingenious and delicious takes on common dishes, it's worth a drive out to Bird Dog in Mattawan. Prices are great, food is consistently good, and the environment is intimate and social.

My partner and I have dined at Bird Dog many times over the years, but the quality has noticeably declined as of our last visit. The food, from appetizers to entrées, arrived messy and poorly presented. My entrée even came out about five minutes before my partner’s, which made the meal feel disjointed. The drinks were also weak and slow to arrive, despite the restaurant not being particularly busy.
For the prices they charge, you’d expect much more attention to preparation, presentation, and timing. It’s especially disappointing because we have such fond memories of past meals here. Unfortunately, the experience no longer feels worth the cost.

First time visiting the Bird Dog!The Filet Mignon was excellent and the chocolate brownie cheesecake was so light and delicious. Definitely will visit again.

Bird Dog was recommended to us from a friend. We a loyal Sunday breakfast family, but, have been disappointed time and time again, since the sale of our local restaurant that we have been going to over 30 years. All I can say is the flavors are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! from their basic scrambled eggs to their bacon which is GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!! They are a very unique breakfast bistro!!!!!!!! Very easy to get to off the highway..... Go and get you some!!!!!!!!!!! Staff is very friendly with their open kitchen. LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!! We will definitely be back to try lunch or dinner as well.
What a surprise gem! We stopped at Bird Dog after a long drive; some of us weren’t feeling great, tired, and honestly, I wasn’t even that hungry. But the food turned everything around. My son said it was the best burger he ever had, my wife claimed the best fried chicken sandwich she ever had (it looked fabulous), and I had the best eggs Benedict of my life, perfectly cooked, rich, bacon to die for and a balanced light hollandaise sauce that allowed more fresh flavors out. We eat out a lot but, by the end, I swear our moods had lifted. We all left genuinely happier than when we arrived. That’s the kind of meal that reminds you why great food matters. A small venue well worth the wait. Thank you!!!

We drive 25 min just for their breakfast! Pls stop using canola oil - charge more and use olive oil - butter - avocado oil. Thank you.
