Under new management (and the new name, El Carretonero) since 2022. The main entrance is on Main Street about a block from the main drag of downtown. Fairly standard Mexican-American cuisine; the chips were warm and the salsa was fine. One of the staff offered us a small sample of the salsa used for the tacos; it has a bit of a kick, and there are three hot sauces on your table to choose from. Service is friendly. There's a vegetarian combos section, although I strongly suspect there's chicken stock in the rice and I didn't ask about lard in the beans. They were happy to give me a cheese quesadilla with fajita vegetables which I dosed with the salsa; my companions had the fajitas and were satisfied. Oddly enough, in addition to the standard Mexican desserts (flan, sopapillas, churros) they have a couple of Italian desserts on the dessert menu (tiramisu!). I got the "Copa Caffe" which was a pre-packaged food service ice cream/coffee dessert with chocolate coffee beans, which was quite tasty (note that it should be stirred; there's a slug of sweet frozen coffee syrup in the bottom). No liquor license but a variety of soft drinks including Jarritos. No new culinary frontiers are being braved here, but it's a solid choice. The restaurant setup is a little weird; the restaurant was obviously expanded at one point (the expansion to the original restaurant clearly features sidewalk instead of floors and an uninsulated roof, like a closed-in sun room) but there's still room for outdoor seating.

I got the “carne asada” meal for $18 , was scrapping the plate trying to cut my thin overcooked piece of steak that had no flavor and the portion of rice was as thin as the steak spread out on the plate , best I can say was they had fresh vegetables .

Food was not very tasty. Fried ice cream could be better and the shell tasted like it was stale.

Came here during lunch hour while visiting Midland for the week. Getting seating was quick and service was pretty fast as well. Starting with the chips and salsa, wasn't a big fan of either. The salsa tasted a bit off in my opinion and I have had much better elsewhere. Being from TX, my standards may be really high though. I ordered the steak fajitas. I was pretty disappointed in the meal because of the lack of meat. It was seriously more onions and bell peppers than steak and the rice/ beans/ salad side was very small. The steak itself was pretty rubbery and unseasoned in my opinion. Overall, probably won't visit here again, but if you're looking for pretty standard Mexican / TexMex food, this may be a good option for you.

The food & service were top notch, but... the atmosphere is showing its age. That is fine & actually gives it a kind of charm, but the lack of a deep cleaning really distracts me from what would otherwise have been a great experience. The bathrooms, hallway leading to the bathrooms & dusty overhead light fixtures are what stood out the most to me & things like that make me wonder if the kitchen has the same lack of attention. The food was wonderful & well priced, but I highly recommend they address these easily remedied solutions.
Maybe some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Nice people, though.

Husband's meal was brought out 10 minutes before mine after we had already waited well over 1/2 hour for food to be brought out.He said his fajitas were good.I didn't care for my tropical shrimp salad.

Your classic Mexican restaurant, salsa was smooth and thick but had a good flavor. Tacos tasted good and the rice and beans were standard.
