I was looking through our online checking account, and I saw all these charges for Little Me and I told my husband I thought our account had been hacked. He looked at the charges and told me it was The Little Mermaid Cafe in Askov. The…what? The restaurant is in a building that used to be a school and also houses the town’s history museum. To be clear, this isn’t a fine dining venue, but if I was headed up to Duluth, I’d drive right past Tobie’s and hit The Little Mermaid for breakfast. Much better food, no Up North tourist crowds and better service. What makes this place so special is Michelle, who runs it with care and pride. She is supported by young service staff and many members of the community who volunteer there. Let that sink in for a moment. The people of Askov believe in this place so much, they donate their time. I love that, and I’m sure it’s a business model that probably won’t work outside of a small town like this. Great breakfast food, the burgers and sandwiches are solid. I didn’t try any of the pies because I happened to stop in on the 4th Saturday of the month when they offered their Aebleskivers. These are Danish doughnuts? They’re really like a hybrid of a popover and a pancake. Lovely little pastries perfect for sharing. I didn’t get enough time to tour the museum on this visit, but I will make a stop the next time I’m in town.

It was really neat that it was located in a museum so there was a lot of history of neighboring towns. The food was delicious and at a wonderful price. I will certainly be going

We just had breakfast with two friends. All of our meals were delicious. Great home style cooking and super great prices, especially for today. The staff is super friendly and kind and they are very generous with the coffee. We will definitely be back to eat when we are in the area. Love the haystack breakfast!

Tasty home cooking with friendly wait staff in a cute little spot. We saw the sign from the highway and had to make a pit stop.

This restraunt is run by the Pine County Historical Society. When you walk into the old school, it is straightforward. The Society turned the old cafeteria into the restraunt. They did some decorating to transform the space into the restraunt. They are open for breakfast and lunch. We had lunch and were very happy with our food. It's nice to see a building like this converted into useful space. It goes against our tear it down society.I also wrote a post for the museum and gift shop. Please check it out. It is definitely worth the stop.

Love the cute cafe to visit when we don't want to cook while staying at our seasonal camper. New gentleman helped us recently and he was so attentive and on top of things at all times!

Super cool going to a restaurant that is inside an old school. I had biscuits and gravy and that was very good. The waitress was very friendly. When we were done eating, we toured the museum that was inside the old school. Lots of really interesting things in the museum.Kid-friendliness: It's inside an old school so of course it's kid friendly.

We stopped by there because it was time for lunch and we just wanted to try a restaurant away from I-35. We are so glad we did. It’s located in a small Danish town of Askov, thus the name Little Mermaid, a Danish fairy tale, and the cafe is used to be the cafeteria of town’s school which was closed in 2004. We feel we learned so much in the one hour we were there. The food was good and the people were so friendly and wonderful. We want to come back to visit their history museum right next door to the cafe next time.
