Afro Deli & Grill: Cedar Riverside

If you haven't had Afro Deli yet your missing out on some bomb African fushion food. I will say this location for a store front may not be in the best location but their food doesn't show it. We got the Sambusas, fries and fried plantain. The Sambusas were awesome. They were packed full of deliciousness. The fries were perfect and crispy. The plantains were ripe and fried exceptionally. The sauces were tangy and bold. Nothing was over or under done. The food is completely worth a trip downtown for. The customer service was decent and the tables weren't to sticky. Lol. Go get you some Afro Deli.

Everything went downhill. Not sure if it’s new manager, ownership or some procedures but fries are way too heavy, greasy, and soggy. Wraps are fine, but often mangled. Food is fully cooked. If you never had it, try it once then move on. That’s about. Stay away from anything to-go and expect 16 dollars for fries and an entre.

I had the veggie platter which is all vegan except one of the sauces.

One of my go to lunch places. Fantastic food, fantastic price.

Note: The website menu is different than the restaurant menu at this location. The website menu has clear vegan labeling whereas the restaurant menu does not (it only has vegetarian labeling). Also, some website menu items are neither available to order nor listed on the restaurant menu. The Veggie Stew was quite good and consisted of homemade red tomato sauce with eggplant, onions, zucchini, carrots, fresh garlic and African spices. Although it is labeled as vegetarian, the staff confirmed there is no dairy or eggs used, so I concluded it was vegan. I found the regular size to be a perfect portion size. The Hummus & Pita appetizer was fabulous. The pita bread was served warm, and the hummus tasted freshly made. Note they use a shared fryer, so you’ll have to decide if you are ok with cross-contamination for deep fried items.

I ordered a Somali sandwich steak with feta cheese and I made sure to provide all the details. While waiting, the staff told me not to sit at the table, but I was just standing close, leaning forward, with my backside touching the table. After some time, I received the wrong sandwich. When I approached the manager, she insisted I was sitting at the table and promised a refund, which I never received. Instead, she dismissed me and called security, who witnessed the whole situation and knew I wasn’t actually sitting. I felt disrespected in a restaurant that should uphold better values. We've supported Afro Deli since its early days, but it seems like customer dignity is no longer a priority. The manager recognized me as a regular who always orders the same thing, yet she didn't even offer to correct my order or let me wait for it. After spending 20-30 minutes on parking and waiting, I left empty-handed and frustrated after driving 30 minutes for nothing. I took their pictures because she refused to allow me to take picture of the food !

This place really hit the spot. They have a little bit of everything. Definitely good choice of different ethnic meals. Guy working there was super cool and really enjoyed the conversation. I was staying nearby and was really happy. I found it. Free parking in the back was a bonus.

This place is alright! I got the roasted veggie sandwich and fries. While it was good, I found the bread quite mushy / soft and the whole sandwich a bit greasy. Nevertheless, I enjoyed how the food was spiced, and the fries were tasty and came with a delicious sauce! I had the steak sandwich a while ago and i remember that being better, so perhaps the order was a bit off? Nevertheless, worth another try!

Super disappointed! We wanted Afro Deli to cater an event this week. I filled out the catering form on their website and no one reached out for weeks. I called the store 3 times, gave them my contact info, and was told a manager would reach out. Never happened. :( Missed opportunity to cater a large event. We ended up using another restaurant.

Finally made my way over to the location on Cedar/Riverside. Quality remains high and the employees were very nice. This time I ordered the large Afro steak dinner bowl and the hot and spicy wings appetizer. The Afro steak dinner is beef, veggies, and a delicious red sauce over basmati rice. It was perfect, absolutely delicious and you get a lot of food for the price. Came with a side of crispy fries. I also enjoyed the crispy and juicy mini wings. Overall, Afro Deli continues to deliver high quality Afro/Mediterranean fusion cuisine no matter which location you visit.

I bought a large steak dinner and it was heavy diluted with veggies they changed the type of rice which was not basmati rice they give plenty of rice but no protein to go with it
