Visit funky grits after my friend was dying to try it. We weren't impressed. It says it has the best grits in Minneapolis....it most be the only grits here. The food was basic at best. My grits and my greens were unseasoned.
Nice space. Order at the counter, take a number and find a seat. Was with a larger group (6 people) and my meal was missed. Even though we all made separate orders and got different numbers. When I asked the waitress while she brought someone else's meal to the table, she said it's on it's way... so I waited. And nothing. My group was finishing up their meals and decided to inquire again. No one knew what exactly happened, but the meal/order was not made nor served. Ended up taking the meal to go. Meh! Not the best experience. But the fritters were good!
Wow! Good grits are hard to find up here, but these were amazing! I had the Funky Benedict with a side of cheddar grits, and was not disappointed. The ham was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and fried crisp on the edges. The English muffin was also put on the griddle to crisp it up. Absolutely delicious!
Um, not sure about this place and the sad thing is I really want to like it. Tried the corn puppies and didn’t care for these, it is just a big piece of pork belly coated in corn meal and fried. I was thinking it would be more like a hush puppy with a bit of pork belly.
Went for Easter brunch, food was very creative and delicious! Flavors you can’t find anywhere in MSP. The staff is extremely warm and friendly. Don’t walk, run there!
The Funky Grits was good, but didn’t exceed my expectations. I’m from the south so I grew up around grits. I enjoyed the ambiance and the service was great, but I didn’t feel the authenticity of where making grits originated...the South. I ordered the Acadian ...pretty much shrimp ‘n’ grits. The presentation was excellent, but the taste fell a little short. Price range was $11-13/bowl which is little pricey considering grits are pretty cheap. I would recommend the Funky Grits for someone interested in trying grits for the first time, but not for someone who grew up with grits as a staple.
Small venue, down to earth. Oldies Motown music. I enjoyed the flavorful shrimp and grits (Arcadian). There may be a bit of slow service because of small staff, but they are very friendly. Give them a try. Ps. They do a brunch buffet, call for details and times.
The staff was very good at explaining the different choices and there are quite a few. Delicious grits, especially the blue cheese. Excellent shrimp and the fried avocados are a must try. Not a fancy place, but clean and neat. Order at the counter and they bring to your table.
AMAZING. If you like grits, (or other good food) you need to try this place! The Funky Grits were the first thing I tried and absolutely phenomenal. The Acadian (in the picture) also very good! I’ll definitely be back to try brunch and everything else on their menu.
Speaking for the brunch menu, there's a great selection and things are really well priced. I got the el sur grits and the vegan peach cobbler and both were really delicious! I'll have to come back to try the rest of the menu. Highly recommended!

Great family owned southern cuisine restaurant. The flavors are great. Must try the walleye cakes, seafood grits, and the avocado appetizers!
