Went for the first time today and can’t wait to come back. The hospitality and offerings were equally delightful! This place is a gem.

My wife recently visited Sovereign with our daughter, who has epilepsy and is accompanied by her fully trained service dog. Unfortunately, their experience left us feeling deeply unsettled. The owner of the café asked multiple times if the dog was a “real” service animal and whether the dog was well-behaved. While it’s understandable that businesses want to maintain a safe environment, repeatedly questioning the legitimacy of a service dog reflects a lack of understanding about the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities.
💡 Under both the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Minnesota Human Rights Act, service animals are legally permitted in public accommodations, including coffee shops. Service dogs are highly trained to behave appropriately and assist their handlers—this should not require constant justification.
I believe the owner and staff at Sovereign would benefit from additional education and training regarding service animal laws and disability inclusion. This would go a long way in making the café a more welcoming and informed space for all families.
🐾 If you or a loved one relies on a service dog, be aware that this establishment may not yet be fully prepared to accommodate your needs respectfully.

I ordered a quiche and a coffee and I couldn’t finish the quiche, it did not taste good. The place didn’t seem clean and neither did the play area, didn’t seem like they give any sort of maintenance.

The first time I visited Sovereign Grounds the shop was in a smaller corner of what is now the welcoming space for one of the finest coffee shops in Minneapolis. When I returned for a quick dark roast coffee weeks later Hakan, the owner, remembered my NAME! Friends tell me they’ve had the same experience - being greeted by name every time they stop in. Sovereign Grounds is a spacious restaurant filled with comfy furniture (much of it made by Hakan). You’re likely to see a pile of tiny sneakers where toddlers shed their shoes before rushing into the kid’s play area. You’ll see Moms and Dads enjoying delicious coffee drinks and home made pastries. Stop in and treat yourself! Talk to Hakan about reserving the back room for small meetings. (And don’t forget to ask the owner about his pictures of grandkids!)

This is by far the best local coffee shop I've had the pleasure of frequenting. The service is hands down, incredible. The baristas are friendly, and have wonderful banter. H, the owner, is my favorite person in our neighborhood. The drinks are delectable and delicious. Also, the playroom has huge dinosaurs. I have never had a less than perfect visit to Sovereign Grounds. Would highly recommend!
Dietary restrictions: Alternative milk options available. Morning Glory muffin made without dairy.
Kid-friendliness: Entire playroom with plethora of toys and activities to entertain the kids. Dinosaurs. =)

I will never forget asking for a piece of quiche to go and she sent me with a cold piece of quiche. Can not understand why I'd pay for such service.

Great coffee shop to sit for awhile while your toddler and baby can play. The food was excellent and the coffee was great for the price.
Parking: Lots of residential street parking a block away
Kid-friendliness: Great play area with a climbing structure, train table, play kitchen and little riding toys

One thing Minneapolis has a lot of is great local coffee shops, but Sovereign Grounds stands out above the rest. Hakan has created a true community gathering spot, a place where everyone loves coming back to! He remembers my order in the mornings too. On top of all that it is in my opinion the best tasting coffee I've had. It's nice to say that I've found "my" coffee shop!

I have been here a few times and will continue to visit in the future! I love that they have a kids play area to allow kids to play. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Medium noise which is nice for a place to bring kids. Overall wonderful atmosphere.
Chai Latte was really good. Nice thick froth and good and spicy. Cinnamon garnish really brought it home. 9/10
