I can’t believe it’s taken me over 3 months of living very much within walking distance of this lil pizza joint to try it. If you find menu info online, ignore it unless it’s a recent pic of the menu. I was first over enthusiastic about some 90s prices on one common website- that’s no fault of the good folks at Checkerboard so let’s get to it.
They only offer take-out and delivery, no dine-in. I called and ordered take-out.
The food: we ordered a medium (12 inch) thin crust w sausage and onion over all of it, 1/2 green pepper, the other 1/2 mushroom. It was a smidge under $21. Quoted on the phone as 20-25 minutes. I didn’t mind that it took a 10ish minutes longer than expected, but it did. A few minutes after we paid, we popped across the street to the package store for some Cowbell beer and returned to wait another couple minutes.
When we got home and looked at the pizza well, it had mushrooms on about 1/4 of the pizza. It looked quite greasy. The middle wasn’t stiff at all, but it wasn’t blatantly soggy. They square cut it, which made the crustless pieces definitely require a napkin. Overall, the flavors and textures were great.
My partner initially commented when he opened the box and scarfed down a tiny corner slice before I could take a pic, “It isn’t what I expected, but it’s good.” And I agree!!
One point deducted due to the combination of inaccurate predicted wait time, missing mushies on 2 slices, grease level, and my final 2 interesting notes:
1) They DO NOT TAKE CASHAPP. If you use a cashapp card even attached to tap to pay or Apple Pay, it will temporarily hold the money, then refund it. This is on a sign inside the store, idk if they inform deliveries of this/if they take a card over the phone?
2) They had single dice for $1 in one of the gumball type machines up front. Like WHAT??

I ordered delivery on 06/16/24 for my family for dinner when it finally got delivered they forgot are salad so we called and so we are waiting for are salad to get delivered witch it took them almost a hour and a half for them to bring it My name and while we was eating the pizza we also ordered I looked down on a slice that I just picked up to eat and I seen a fruit flie on the slice pizza I was so disgusted and we use to love checkers I will never eat at this place again… that’s a health inspector to check I even showed it to the delivery guy and he said we don’t have them at the store okay if they wasn’t at the place how is it on the pizza you delivered to are house we All was done eating after that…

I haven't eaten here is decades but I have been craving a really big pizza lately. After several rings a guy answered the phone only for a female to say "Hello" which seemed unprofessional. I inquired about delivery for a location a 10 minute drive from there. She automatically shut it down just for the city even though the city begins a few blocks from their business. The website on their page does not exist and neither does the Start Order link on their page. Apparently they are doing well enough they don't need the extra business they could have from a working website, working online ordering system and professionalism.

Sometimes they have dine-in service, but it's mostly take out or delivery. We get pizza here about 1 time every week, and I must say how remarkably consistent the food is. It's still one of my most favorite go-tos for pizza.
The service is always exceptional. I appreciate it that if your wait is going to be a bit longer, they tell you.
I’m not a pizza lover, but if my family wants pizza this is the only place I’ll get it from. It’s that good.
