I love this place so much. The ambience is awesome. The food is great. It’s a cool hang with friends that’s casual, but not dumpy. The vibes are solid AF. And the food is

The food was good and the portions were generous. I loved the fermented flat bread that's served with every dish. The vegan platter was great because I could try so many different things

Really nice restaurant in downtown St. Paul. I had never had Ethiopian cuisine before eating here. Staff was friendly and helpful when we weren’t quite sure what to get. The meat sambusa were delicious with a crispy outside and juicy interior. Lamb Awaze Tibs were seasoned well and a little bit spicy. I thought the injera was good but a totally different flavor profile than I am used to. Would love to go again and try something new like the doro wot.

Lovely spot for a dinner out. Service is always excellent, food is delicious with many vegan options, and the atmosphere is inviting. The design helps the space feel immediately warm on a cold day. Try the veggie platter. Also a very American thing to do but we had the onion rings (which are vegan) and they were delicious! We enjoy the trivia cards on the table which even inspired us to buy our own version. We will be back again soon.

Vegetarian options: Veggie platter with three different lentil dishes, beets, collards, cabbage, potatoes, jalapeño salsa, carrots with green beans...etc which could all be ordered as a main dish. Appetizers (French fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, sambusa, salsa and chips) and possibly dessert, we didn't ask.

Started off my night with a drink. Definitely try their honeycrisp margarita! It's delicious. And packs an alcoholic punch, woof. They also have a variety of beers and ales on tap, including a Summit Lemonade which I thought was pretty good!
They have a wonderful atmosphere which is warm and inviting. Plenty of seating, too. So cozy and a great place to bring a family or another large gathering.
I am a first timer to Ethiopian food so while some of the dishes, including the tartare, spoke to my soul, I opted to play it safe and try the tibs firfir, which came on a bed of injera. The beef was tender and juicy, the vegetables and peppers within fresh and crunchy. The spice was saucy but did not overpower the other wonderful flavors of the dish. Honestly for a first introduction to Ethiopian food, I couldn't have had a better experience.
If you're not an adventurous eater, don't worry--they do have a casual section of their menu which includes burgers and fries. Just don't shy away from the dessert, which includes a GIANT PIECE OF BAKLAVA (seriously look and tell me you've had a piece bigger than that!) that's served warm. I'd definitely add a scoop of ice cream to it next time.
Good vibes, and generous portion sizes for the price!

The staff is really sweet and flexible. We had a vegan platter for two and loved it, huge portion and full of flavour!

Had a great meal. The vegan platter and a stew with chickpea flour and beef tips. Three adults couldn’t finish it all! Great flavors, relaxed atmosphere.

Seemed like only one server for the whole place but not a big deal.

The Erta Ale Special is like a mini feast with a mix of veggie and meat samplers. The portions are huge, so it’s perfect for sharing with friends.

The veggie dishes were full of flavor, and the meat was tender and tasty. The best part? The cozy vibe and super friendly staff who make sure you have a great time.

FYI get the Samosas!!!

Erta Ale is a hidden gem in Lowertown. If you want to explore Ethiopian food, the Erta Ale Special is the way to go!
