What to say. This is the BEST RESTAURANT in Saint Paul. Service, food, and ambient are OUTSTANDING!!!!
Great spot for dinner before a show downtown. Gluten free bun for the burgers was great for my wife.
What a great place to have a night out.
Service was friendly. Short ribs stroganoff was tasty as was the broccolini. My medium sirloin had no pink in it, the mashed potatoes cold and the asparagus was meh. We were really looking forward to the brown butter bread pudding but it was outright soggy - part of it was scalding hot and part of it was cold. We ended up sending it back. The ambiance is strange. It's a beautiful space and prices suggest it's fancy, but there's pop music from the early 2000s playing and giant tv screens with sports.
Too expensive for what you get. Food was good but nothing fancy like the price reflected. Can get very loud as with our experience being seated in the same room as a large award recognition party. Service was good. Very cool old space with lots of history.
I really enjoy Herbie’s and have eaten here many times but I do suggest avoiding the vegetable soup. Far too much salt and the taste was a bit off. Not a fan of the vegetable soup. Great service and great atmosphere as usual!
1140 the door was locked. Staff saw us standing at the door and continued to walk by without acknowledging us. 4 or 5 wait staff saw us but just walked by the door ignoring us standing in the cold. I really wanted to try this place out but I likely will not return as the service is terrible.
Herb Brooks, owner, was the head coach of the Miracle on Ice US men’s hockey gold medal team at the 1980 Olympic games held in Lake Placid, NY. Excellent service, foods, drinks, atmosphere and location adjacent to the city park and the historic St. Paul Hotel.
Vegetarian options: Salads, soups, pastas that I can recall.
Kid-friendliness: Very accepting and accommodating

We patronized Herbie’s before a performance at the Ordway on a Sunday. The menu was more diverse than I expected, which was great. We had 8 people with us and all meals were excellent.
Our server was attentive, personable, and a pleasure to deal with.
There is no question we’ll go back during a Wild game.

Had a steak and a summer salad before a show at the Xcel. Cooked perfectly, delicious. Great place to eat before an event.

The staff were friendly and welcoming. Samantha, our server, was amazing and attentive.
We had the Curry Cauliflower, which was delicious, and a total of four drinks. Cocktails are $16 each, which seems a bit steep compared to the food prices. Overall, it was a great experience!

We had a very disappointing and expensive dinner here before a show at the Ordway (Six!). Really nice location with that classic St Paul charm - beautiful woodwork and comfortable seating. The service was friendly but overall inattentive, even though it wasn't very busy. This I can overlook if the food would have met expectations for the pricing on the menu. However, the menu needs some serious reconsideration - do they want to be a fine dining establishment or an overpriced pub?
We had seven diners who had a couple appetizers and drinks. No one had more than an "ok" experience. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was actually pretty good, but it was all down hill from there. Even the drinks (@$16+ apiece) tasted watered down. I will highlight some of the most egregious parts of the menu:
1. Beer cheese mac - $25 - be prepared for a boat of pasta that could serve at least 2 or 3 people. The flavors were ok, but it wasn't anything spectacular and certainly nothing more than boxed pasta with some basic cheese sauce. It definitely did not live up to the price tag which means that you are paying for the EXCESSIVE portion. It's pub Mac and cheese not fine Italian so it should be priced accordingly, or noted as a shareable entre.
2. Salmon burger - $20 - The "burger" was mealy, dry and lacked flavor. It claimed to have caper aioli but came without any sauce at all. This could have been rectified if the server came back to check on us.
3. The walleye cakes, single - $21 - this was also a dry and mealy creation covered in way too much dill sauce that overpowered any flavor of the cake. Sadly, this disappointing crab cake wannabe, was only walleye priced as if it were actually crab.
4. Bacon bleu burger - $20 - This may have been the most disappointing burger I've had in St Paul, despite the description of the hand-patty meat blend. Sadly, there was no flavor on the burger at all, as though it wasn't even threatened with seasoning, and the gochujang sauce didn't make up for the lack of flavor. The bun was soggy at the base and dry and crumbly on top, while the blue cheese was a square slice rather than quality crumbles. It was supposed to be cooked medium, but half was cooked well-done and the other half near rare, demonstrating an extreme lack of consistency.
I could continue with the other items we ordered, but I think this highlights the sad state of food at this restaurant. For those of you who made it this far, I might sound like a complainer (I wish I would have taken photos to add for proof), but we had a show to attend. We didn't have time to go back and forth with the server, who besides being absent, isn't in charge of the menu or food quality. I'm sure many readers can agree how quickly time seems to fly by before you have to get to showtime, and that you don't want to ruin your evening by having uncomfortable moments with underpaid wait staff. My intention with this is to alert future diners to save their money (we had an over $300 bill) and go somewhere else. I wish I had read the reviews beforehand because other diners have had similar complaints. Restaurants have bad evenings and I understand that, but based on there being an issue with nearly everything we ordered, I will not be returning.

I came here over lunch and was pleasantly surprised! Herbie's has a really great bar and seating area with nice views of Rice Park. The atmosphere was cozy, and the food was also great as was the service. I got a half summertime picnic salad with chicken. The half salad was plenty for me, and all the food was very fresh. I didn't feel rushed, no reservation was needed at lunch, and all in I would say this is a pretty versatile restaurant where you could do a business lunch or bring your kids.
