Grits are the best of any local restaurants. The particular coffee they use is very strong, not a fan. I think it's hard to scramble one egg..it's was flat. Biscuits are huge and fluffy.

This esd the worst experience I've had since visiting this restaurant. Our food arrived cold. The food wasn't to our liking and we were scared to send back. I've seen and been told personally how restaurants do when food is returned. We just didn't want to take a chance.

Only been here twice and the food has been fantastic. Good value for the amount of food you're getting and it's all home style.
My only complaint is each times I get the country potatoes, they are slightly cold. The thick cut hash browns are sooooo damn good, highly recommend them. Also highly recommend the chorizo breakfast burrito.

We came to Black Bear on Thanksgiving and it was the worst experience we have ever had. It was about 3:30 so they weren't that busy. We were seated and waitress finally took our order after about a 5 minute wait. She brought our salads and then went on a break outside, then she came back in about 10 minutes later we thought maybe we would get our food but, she went back into the kitchen and brought out silverware to wrap. After 7 other tables that were seated after us and we're already eating their food we started asking other waitresses why we weren't getting our food. They said our order was about to come up. In the mean time other waitresses had refilled our drinks and ask if they could get us anything else. We said just or food. Finally our waitress made an appearance and she said she had waited for 20 minutes to turn our order in because we were eating our salad. For one thing it doesn't take 20 minutes to eat a salad and I said we were hungry we would like our food since half of the restaurant had already gotten and ate their food and we were still waiting. She finally brought the food and instead of turkey gravy on our mashed potatoes there was white gravy, she forgot to bring the cranberry sauce. All in all it completely ruined what should have been a good Thanksgiving. We have been to Black Bear numerous times and even brought family to eat there. Each time was really good but, not this time. We probably would have come back for Christmas dinner but, after that experience we will probably go elsewhere.

This place has great food, great staff and is always open on Christmas Day.
If you're looking for a great place to eat, (If you can find parking in the busiest hours), this place will not disappoint.
A favorite amongst the locals and neighboring towns.

For a place thats feels like a taste of the film The Great Outdoors, then this is it. The menu was extensive, with everything you could possibly want to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between. There is definitely something for everyone here at the Black Bear Diner in Independence Missouri. They have a wonderful atmosphere and the menu was just like a news paper. There were so many locations that it takes up two columns of the paper, with a story about how the restaurant came to be in 1995. Its amazing to see that longevity being incorporated into a fun way to engage with patrons as the sit down for their first meal or their 100th. I will definitely keep their restaurants on my list of places to eat for everyone.
