Well my first experience here wasn’t a great one. I went in around 7:15 on a Sunday to get some take out . I was greeted with weird looks and at first I didn’t notice but the young lady walked up and said they had closed the kitchen for the night. I’m like the hours say 8:30pm… there was no response. It’s like tell me what the correct hours are and why do people close early and not just change their time.

Prison Brews was very busy during my most recent visit. I ordered a black and blue burger with onion rings. The burger was great but the onion rings could use a little tweak. The onion ring batter cooked way to hard for my liking. The flavor overall was good but the shell was just way too hard.

Prison Brews does a good job playing on their historical uniqueness and proximity to Jeff City's slammer. Restaurant decor is themed around the cell block. Our mid-week trip to Prison Brews in December was relaxing and low-key which allowed everyone in our group ability to talk and hear each other. With the bar, fairly robust food menu, sports on multiple TVs and downtown location, Prison Brews has been busy and lively during fair weather. Nice outdoor patio seating in the courtyard with strings of hanging lights. Inside is a unique restaurant and craft brewery with your basic ales, stout, porter, and full bar.
The menu offers a solid variety of unique sandwiches, burgers, wood-fired pizzas, and various entrees, soups/salads and apps. My prison burger which I ordered medium-rare was served hot yet nicely kept pink in the middle. Came with lettuce, tomato, pickle & onion with a side of fries. For a slight upcharge, there are sautéed onions, mushrooms or bacon. I enjoyed the grilled onion on my burger & you choose from four different cheeses. I added extra condiments to help with flavor and compensating for the dry bun.
Prison nachos had good flavor from the diced onion & tomato, sliced jalapeños and cheese sauce. Nacho lovers can choose from chicken, beef or pulled pork for a few dollars more. Salsa and sour cream topped it off.
Another member of our group ordered the Rueben sandwich which was a little thin, but had good flavor.
Our young server was very kind and friendly. She came by to ask about additional beer and wine drinks but didn't refill our waters. She did great otherwise and our meals came out about 15 minutes after ordering.
The restaurant was in good shape and mostly well cleaned. Bathroom wasn't super clean, but points for repurposing kegs into urinals and the sink bowls.
Another solid visit to humorous Prison Brews & now I know winters are a time when things are less busy.

We have been to Prison Brews many times and were satisfied with the service. However, this time was not the case. It was a Friday night around 5:45 pm when we arrived. First of all we walk in the restaurant and were asked if a table was ok because thats all they had open. We walked in there were two booths open but we were not seated at a booth. We were seated at a four top between two very large parties of 15+ people. We should of left then as that was an indication of what our service would be like. Not one minute after we were seated another group was seated at the booth. They were given drinks
before a waiter even got to us. We sat there at least 15 minutes before waiter took our drink order. Another group came in 20 minutes after us and got their drinks and food before us. We waited at least 30 min for appetizer then 20 minutes for our food. There were 3 us and only 2 of us got our food. I had to wait an extra 15 more minutes for my food. My family was done with their meal before I got mine. Forget about refills of our beverages. The chicken philly sandwich I ordered was not what I thought it was going to be. It had pesto sauce on it and was not to my liking. We spent at least an hour and a half + here. I would say this was the worst service we have had at a restaurant in Jefferson City in along time. Very disappointed.

We had a very large party and the server did an amazing job yesterday. The food was great. I had black and Bleu burger with sweet potato fries. Dipping sauce was wild! Would definitely go back.

Very bad service. Took a long time to get a drink ordered. Very hard getting gluten free questions answered. Pizza had too much sauce. They did offer to remake it but we didnt want it. The $29 steaks were thin, chewy and tough. They were servers with butter knives to cut with. Not a good experience.

This is one of the most unique brewery concepts I've seen. It plays well with the neighboring and now closed down Missouri State Penitentiary. The concept inside is fun and gives it a unique vibe different from other breweries. Beers were good. Food was decent.

Things were a little slow this night we stopped. To be fair they had a large table of about 20.
The tenderloin sandwich was really good in my opinion. The kids grill cheese though was really heavy and greasy. Daughter was not a fan. My wofe got the chicken Philly and the special sauce is a pesto blend.... not really what we thought it would be. The buffalo chicken dip had good flavor. But was made with whipped cream cheese. That made it really lite and fluffy. Again. Just not our thing. We will try again and try the burgers or pizza.
