Worst customer service I’ve experienced in a long time. Incompetent lazy workers. Awful experience and do not recommend.
Our favorite! You won’t be disappointed!
MAGAt owners, same with Shatto - this is a NO
after waiting 45 minutes in line I found out they had sold out of 8 flavors they had not taken off their wall or website, then their ad claiming to stuff your stanley, 40oz. was a lie, it didn't even fill the 40oz stanley half way. Will not be back
On Monday, i came in for a quick scoop. Some might say the the owner of this establishment was borderline harrassing his employees. The way he spoke to his staff was appalling. Never in my life had I seen such inappropriate behavior. This place has really gone downhill since new ownership took over. If I could leave a lesser review I would.
I really wanted this ice cream joint to be a great go to spot. Unfortunately I went in there with my 75 year old mom and they were very dismissive of us. Mind you we are Muslim black women. And right off the bat, I got the look up and down, my mom wanted to try the flavors first they basically dismissed her, made it seem like they were busy, mind you there were no lines. And the woman on counter duty didn’t seem that interested in helping us. I got so irritated I left. Betty reas do better it’s 2025.
Kinda watery shakes, coffee ice cream didnt taste like coffee
I raved about this place to two of my out of town girlfriends that came to visit because ice cream is our jam when we get together and the experience for them was not what I was use to. The young lady behind the counter gave small sizes and seemed like we was an inconvenience.
Seems like the quality of their vegan flavors has dropped some over the last year or so. They used to list the vegan flavors online, but stopped doing so.
Great ice cream but it seems as they are growing they are becoming more corporate instead of local ice cream shop. For instance, I used to be able to ask for two flavors in a medium and now I have to buy a large for two flavors. An independent shop would happily help their customer out and likely get a bigger tip. Now it just feels corporate.
Also - get some breezeways in your shops. It gets cold in the winter.
It is great ice cream.

Betty Rae's is a great little ice cream spot in KC's River market district. Fun spot, interesting offerings, and great staff. One critique is an odor emanating from beneath the main line case. I'm not certain what causes that, but it is quite offensive. We love your place and look forward to visiting again.

My wife and I have always loved the River Market location but recently went to the new location in OP and it wasn’t near the same unfortunately. Both of our ice cream were freezer burnt and just didn’t taste fresh at all

I don't understand how this place is so highly rated. Maybe because I am only an out-of-town visitor.
I must say I was very disappointed in my experience at Betty Rae's. I came here with friends at an hour before closing on a random weeknight and we stood in line for 90 mins. Two out of the four of us gave up halfway through and left, but two of us stayed behind to Make it through the door to buy ice cream. It was a really hot Kansas City evening so we were sweating our behinds off outside, but we were grateful to finally be able to get inside and buy some ice cream. There were only two young people working behind the counter and they were hustling, but with the super long line they just could not keep up. I'm not sure how the store is run but I think they need to hire more people or do something else about this because that was ridiculous. The worst part was we finally got our ice cream but since the store was closing, we had to go outside to eat and on a hot Kansas City evening my ice cream melted within three minutes. So after waiting over an hour in the heat I only got to try the ice cream for a few bites before it all became a milkshake. I know that's not the fault of the store but honestly, the flavors of the ice cream were nothing spectacular. They also ran out of the flavors. I actually wanted so that was not great either.
Also, just so you know, if you were the last person to make it in line, you get a sticker on your shirt that says you are the last person and somehow it becomes your responsibility to turn away the 45 people that will come after you. The guy that was last was so frustrated and furious that he had to be the one to turn everybody away and he had to deal with all those people huffing and puffing at him. I hope he at least got free ice cream.
All in all, I'm just confused at the high ratings because to me this place was just like any typical ice cream parlor except it was poorly run.

Ice cream is good, but my dairy-free partner couldn’t have any the last time we went because the dairy-free flavors had serious contamination from multiple other flavors, making it no longer dairy-free. If we hadn’t seen that ourselves, they would have served us and she would have been sick. Came specifically because there were supposed to be dairy-free options but not going to go back now that we know that even that doesn’t mean there are actually options.
