A romantic dining ambiance paired with quality eats. Good local dining off the beaten path! The food is solid. An admirable customer service experience. The venue is small but endearing. Book the table closest to the kitchen to fully immerse yourself in greatness. A great choice to celebrate an anniversary or impress a date at an affordable price. I can't wait for this restaurant to come back!

Service was wonderful; attentive, friendly and fun. Food was delicious and beautifully executed. We just did ala carte because we were on a time crunch but we're definitely going back for the tasting menu. Wine recommendation was spot on and reasonably priced. But the cherry on top...we were sat by the window which in February means cold; however, we had a personal space heater to keep us toasty warm. Such a fantastic touch!

This place is not just dinner; it's an experience...and an awesome one at that! First, the staff and servers were very friendly. They made us feel right at home the entire night. The food is fine dining quality and delicious! I had the steak and it was prepared just the way i like it (I like it very rare). My friends got the duck breast and it tasted amazing. They have a $70 10 course meal. It sounded amazing, but everyone at the table has to agree to it. (That's 70 per person) it sounded really fun and exciting but we were a larger group so we just order entrees like normal. Definitely recommend this place if you want to have a nice evening out!

Reviews/info said this place was classy fine dining. So why, when I reserved a table in advance on open table, were we seated at the bar with 80's/90's pop music blaring and a bartender who musta thought it was karaoke night? Our server, a diff bartender, was great. Pea soup and crawfish hush puppies were ok. Sea bass was well cooked but veggies and potato pave (brick) epic fail...or so my dining companion said. Pork loin was some of the best I've had and the Irish creme cake was tasty. Not a horrible price point....2 apps, 2 entrees a dessert and 2 rounds of drinks for 120.00 before tip. I was just disappointed that the experience was so different than what I thought it would be based on reviews. I may give them another go...but I'll call and make sure my table is in the restaurant dining room and nor a reservation for a place in the bar

Freshwater: A Review "Pick one off our list", my wife said. As our people know, we have a list of restaurants we want to visit, so in an effort to scratch one off, I chose Freshwater. Ignore the fact that I got it completely confused with an entirely different place. "You didn't even look at the menu"! That was Janice in the car. Well, turns out I didn't really have to, since the first piece of information on their website is that they change menus often, and what was shown was merely a snapshot of their food philosophy. So, when we arrived at the midtown spot, I was a blank canvas. I don't like broad characterizations, but as soon as we walked in I thought this was a hipster paradise with food, but hey, I don't have an ax to grind with hipsters. The restaurant has two parts. One is a comfy front room, with tables set with enough breathing space between them for the experience. Then there is the back room, which is divided between nice tables that look like they got lost and ended up in the kitchen and well, the kitchen. I know open cooking stations have been a trend for a while, but this was just a little off-putting. I have great respect for professional cooks, but this is not the time for handling food with bare hands. We might have opted for their ten course tasting menu, but the seating rattled us, and we decided to go ala carte. This was a second bit of serendipity, as the food we ordered was spot on. We started with Midwest Mezze, a dish of perfect felafel, enhanced with chestnuts, and enriched with house yogurt and Harissa. The warm pita was a magnificent touch. Next up was Crawfish hushpuppies, topped with a crisp kimchee, and spiced with a Harissa aioli. It was a mistake choosing two items with similar texture profiles, but still, they were scrumptious, and the crawfish flavor was front and center. The third course would be our favorite. A homemade gnocci with shittake mushrooms, beef Strogonoff, pickled onions, and creme fraiche. This was a perfect bite, with every component elevating the dish. On the other hand, course four would be our only disappointment, Our flatiron steak need two more minutes on the "iron". It was underdone and tepid, as was the sweet potato gratin, although this item was a potential standout. There was supposed to be a winter vegetable salad, but it might have gotten a chill and gone indoors, because I don't remember it at all. The dish ate overly sweet, and the Bordelaise sauce bordered on cloying. However, there was a fine dessert of a coffee-forward cake filled with Baileys pastry creme and topped with a coffee buttercream. It was a little unsophisticated in presentation, but delivered well in flavor. At $12 bucks a serving, it seemed pricey, but the final bill came to just over $100, which we found to be astonishingly reasonable, and this included a Tank 7 as well as February Fizz, a cocktail Janice was over the moon about. We will definitely be back, and next time it won't be d*** luck.

Amazing place and different menu

We had the most scrumptious meal that was perfectly prepared and served. Every dish is so carefully designed, both to taste wonderful and to look beautiful. The servers make dining out at Freshwater such a treat and everyone makes you feel welcomed and special. Vegetarian's will find lots of options both on the regular menu and as specially prepared options by the chef. Love, love, love this place!!!!

One of our new favorite KC places! Excellent menu for foodies and service was outstanding. We got a last minute spot on a Sat night with no reservations in kitchen with a view outside on a snowy winter's night. Perfect ambiance. Even with a full house, we had one of the best service experiences yet in KC.

Two date nights here and both were delightful. Food is interesting and tasty and the service is excellent. The small space creates an intimate atmosphere that feels homey and warm. A Midtown KC favorite!

We dined on New Year’s Eve. My husband specifically asked for a table, and not the bar on the phone. When we arrived, they tried to seat us at the bar, where music was blaring, for a 7 course meal. They sat us near the front door at a very rickety table. Our server was nice. The man who brought out the courses from the kitchen talked to us like we were on some sort of ridiculous cooking show. Of all the courses, I only enjoyed bits and pieces of a few. Chicken pate was yummy. Prime rib was good. The dessert, although tiny, was the best part. Overall, definitely not worth the money spent.

We had the tasting menu and every moment of our experience was outstanding. The food is delicious and the service is fantastic. I can't wait to go back to do this all over admin.

My wife and I just ate here for the first time and it was fantastic! We tried the 10 course tasting menu for the amazing price of $55; and I couldn't believe how well-prepared the food was and how much of it we received! Given the low price, I'd expected the servings to be small or the food quality to be average, but neither was the case. The dishes were unique and delicious - Smoke bass crudo, Brandade with potato on crustini, and steak with chimichurri, to name a few. The restaurant is a little cramped, and is divided into two pieces. My wife and I dnex Update: We went back and it was just as good! They have finished renovations so the ambience is excellent and the restaurant feels less cramped. We ordered on our own this time rather than having the tasting menu; and everything was excellent. The portion sizes are surprisingly big for such a nice restaurant, so we actually over-ordered a bit. The small plates are phenomenal and big enough for my wife and I to have several bites each. If you decide not to try the tasting menu, I recommend splitting an entree, dessert, and two or three small plates between a couple for an excellent meal.

I didn't get any photos, but this was one of our most enjoyable meals in Kansas City. We came for a wedding anniversary, with notes in the "tasting menu" reservation that one party member could do have wheat or lactose on their plate. I was impressed with how well the kitchen accommodated that! For example, both plates had a medallion of beef but one plate with sweet potato gratin and the other had rounds of roasted potatoes. Another plate set had chicken- one with toasted corn bread and the other with spaghetti squash rosti. Favorites were the raw sea bass, acorn squash soup, rolled and filled chicken with crisped skin, beef, strawberry sorbet.... OK, actually everything was a favorite except the meat on the charcuterie board (just too gamey for our taste) and the pasta dishes. Well, the GF pasta at least- I'm just not a big fan of bolognese sauce and if there's a perfect GF sub for wheat pasta I've yet to meet it in my life. If the restaurant staff sees this: thank you for an incredible evening. It really was FANTASTIC and we hope to come back.
