Went to Gates on July 4th and ordered a slab (heavy on the sauce)got home and the slab was burnt with hardly any sauce on it at all. This establishment has high prices but they don't have high standards as far as food preparation and customer service. The two ladies who were working the counter were arguing with each other right in front of the customers. This is my last time paying my hard earned money for ridiculously bad food. I like to support black businesses but Gates are one of the worst food establishments in Kansas City.

Went to 12th street last and stayed to listen to the band. The server for the dining room was soooooo rude. I was going to tip her but each encounter with her just got worse and worse.

Stars are for the turkey. Had a combo with turkey and beef. Beef was dry. Second time getting that and the beef hasn't changed.
Was in town visiting and I heard good things about Gates back in Chicago, so I had to try them out. Stoped in before heading to the Saints vs Chiefs game. Ordered the turkey on a bun w/fries and lemonade. The turkey was good, the fries were fresh out the grease, but they don’t season the fries, you have to salt them yourself. The total was like $20 so a bit pricey. The sauce has a sweet but spicy taste to it.

Pretty good. Got the mixed platter - ribs, beef and turkey. Ribs were tasty, meaty good texture and great flavor. Beef - brisket - was thin sliced and fatty. Good with sauce, but not on its own. Turkey was good, like it would be good on a sandwich, but not as good as I hoped. The fries were plain - ask for the seasoning! And the onion rings were great.

My wife and I came in from out of state and asked the locals what they thought was the best bbq place and they recommended Gates. We were pretty excited as we are originally from TX so we love bbq! The service was okay but not friendly. You weren't greeted but told to grab a tray and asked what you wanted to order. There wasn't any room to ask questions. None of the employees seemed like they wanted to be there. The only people who were friendly was the gentleman who offered bbq sauce and the lady who was our dining room hostess was sweet. We spent 40 bucks and it was definitely not worth it. The brisket was too fatty. The fries were hard and room temperature. The chicken link was okay but a little too hot to enjoy. The best thing were the beans. We will definitely not be coming back here next time we are in town!!
