Do not be deterred and head straight to Island Spice. This is the best Jamaican food in Kansas City. So good it literally raises your mood! Try the jerk chicken with braised cabbage and red beans/rice. So good!!! Tastes like grandmas in the kitchen working hard. One of my favorite spots.

Walked in saw some homeless and hustlers around and looked like hole in wall I thought oh this will be so good. Asked for daily specials she said only from 11-2 I ordered oxtails and said I can't sub sides only comes with rice . I asked if she had candied yams and she looked at me and made a face like she smelled some pee. Turned right around and drove to exclusive jerk over by watts mills. Night and day difference.

Let me get one thing straight… these are by far the best oxtail I have had… when people come in from out of town this is one of the places I show off… however no matter how good they are I will never be disrespected… I came down to get some oxtail as I do often and I stay quite a ways away…. I had a guess with me and I order our food get back to the house and start eating them by the way my one year old love them too lol ( but he started hollering when he grab one) however they were so spicy that I called them and told the lady my problem that I thought someone made a mistake and dumped red pepper in them and she was very understanding and said some people want them spicy and my order could have got mixed up with another order… she said I can give you a refund and I said oh no I’ll bring these back and get a new order and she said no we can’t take food back just come sometime today and we will make you another order she got my name and we said bye…. My daughter get off work and I tell her to stop by and pick up my and my guess food… she get there and another lady went off and told get the other food and bring it back and my daughter got me on the phone and seriously the lady was acting as though we was robbing her for food and then my daughter said momma get the food ready I’m going to bring it back and the lady said I’ll call her she didn’t tell you that so she called the lady after she kept disrespecting my daughter as a liar and the lady told her we was right and she wrote it down but the lady refused but a man came to the window and told my daughter they going to give her the order because the lady said she did say that… but because of their error and The blatantly disrespect that the lady was given this will never happen to us again because we will never be back. Prices is way too high to be treating your customers like trash..

I am visiting Kansas City from an east coast city that has a good population of Caribbean people. I stopped here because I usually eat Caribbean food every 4-5 months. I mention this because I have something to compare it to. Brown stewed chicken, rice and peas, and cabbage is always my go to! I stopped here and got and order of brown stewed chicken, rice and peas, and cabbage. I was sooooooooo disappointed! The rice and peas to super super mushy. It was alot of peas in the rice. The brown stewed chicken was dried out as if had been continuously reheated. And it tasted more salty versus seasoned. It was also expensive. It was a big $19 disappointment and I will not be going there again.

Hole in the wall with good food. Special that day was less than $10 and was very good, Jerk Chicken. Young man behind the counter was very nice. Was surprised when I tipped him on my to go order.

Love the jerk chicken here. My only complaint is that the rice and beans were not made fresh. The rice and beans tasted as if it was reheated and the cabbage was not reasonable portion size. I ordered a dinner and was disappointed about the cabbage. I love their festival and that also was not fresh. Hopefully, the freshness of the food as well as the portion size continue to improve
