Chinese-Malay food. Amazing
It's NOT Malaysian food. If you're Malaysian you are going to be greatly disappointed. The thing that looks like karipap is actually a giant samosa. As a Malaysian, 0/10 If grading as generally Asian-ish food then 6/10
Not exactly what we're used to with Malaysian food (other reviewers have been pretty spot on...tamed down spice levels...I've struggled to find any place that doesn't here in KC), but a lot better than some other Asian restaurants in KC!
Malaysia is one of my favorite countries to live in and visit so I was very disappointed with the beef rendang and nasi goreng. Neither resembles anything like ethnic Malay rendang or nasi goreng. The beef with vegetables dish pictured below tasted fine but if I wanted beef and vegetables I would have gone to the Chinese buffet next door. I wanted Malay food. I did not bother to take a picture of the nasi goreng, which tasted no different from chicken fried rice with curry powder.
This was SO good. My brother came for lunch and it was so good we came back as a family for dinner the same day!!!
Terrible. The royal shrimp had tiny shrimp. About 6 of them. The sauce and rice had a funny taste. I couldn't eat it.
Great food, great price, and overall great place.
Great food at reasonable prices. No alcohol served but the food is wonderful. My favorites are the steamed dumplings, Royal Almond Chicken or Sambal shrimp. Their friend bananas are awesome, too. They have coconut flakes on the batter and are covered in a delightful syrup. Great food, prices and service. Highly recommend
I tried Malay Cafe for the first time over the weekend. I've never had Malaysian food, so I can't comment on its authenticity. While I suppose it would be nice if it was indeed authentic, I'm more interested in whether I enjoyed my meal, and my Pepper Beef was really quite good. I was a little concerned when they brought out the plate because it looked like a lot of meat. Usually there's an trade-off between quality and quantity, but the beef was tender and flavorful. Better yet, there were a lot of vegetables underneath (onions, carrots, broccoli, zucchini, cabbage, mushrooms, etc). The menu had a hot pepper beside this entree to indicate that it's spicy, but I found it to be fairly mild despite asking for a little extra heat. I was very hungry and still took home about 1/3 of the portion. The leftovers were delicious! I will definitely go back when I'm in that part of the city again.
This place never disappoints. The Black Pepper Beef is amazing. The soup at lunch is amazing, the coconut shrimp, cheese wontons, summer rolls and the turmeric rice they serve all amazing. They serve a fried sweet potato with just about everything again amazing. The jasmine iced tea is so good. I could keep going but it would be the same AMAZING.
