Do not go there for happy hour thinking it is anything special. They say there are "discounts". $4 off a $31 dollar pitcher of margaritas that after drinking them were still half ice. Our waitress didn't take our food order for twenty minutes. I used to love this place.

Been here just a few times. Cool place and location, service is just fine, margaritas are decent but not great, and food has been largely your typical midwest-style Mexican food-- good enough most of the time, but last visit was very bland.Salsa verde and cheese dip were great, though.

The people at the table next to us found us a little too loud and decided to be rude about it

We were a party of 14 with no reservations. They were able to seat us n take are orders within a few minutes of entering their establishment, even though they had a pretty full restaurant. The waitress was very efficient and they brought are food out within about 10 or 15 minutes. Everyone was pleased with their food.

Place was busy. Food was great. Server kept forgetting our drinks. Didn't ask about separate tickets. Don't know how they did the seating. A couple times a party of 4 was seated before us. We were there before the others. Server not pleasant and welcoming.

Ponak's is a bit of a cult favorite in the restaurant world in our opinion. We've been coming here for 30 years, about once or twice a year when we're in the city, and it never disappoints! Prices have gotten a little high as is the case with nearly every other restaurant which is always a bit of a disappointment, but just a fact of life now I suppose. 5 star review for sentimentality, atmosphere and good food.

Parking: Parking behind the restaurant is pretty cozy especially on friday and saturday nights. Had to pull out of the parking spot to let mom in the truck last time.

This is a typical Mexican restaurant, and if you like that, you’ll enjoy your food here. We got the queso dip, and it had a good flavor. The chips were good. They had non-alcohol beer which we appreciated. My partner had pulled pork enchiladas, and they were what you’d expect from any typical Mexican restaurant. I got the fish tacos which sadly are the worst fish tacos EVER. Crispy corn tortilla with a large slab of fish in it that was dry and tasted previously frozen. It was topped with plain, dry shredded cabbage like what you buy at the store to make coleslaw. But there was no sauce on it. That was it. A slab of fish and dry shredded cabbage. It did come with a side of some kind of thick, cold tartar sauce that was horrible and some tasteless Pico de gallo that was also on the side in a plastic cup. Didn’t taste at all fresh. No juice or flavor at all. There’s no love or freshness or taste layers in the fish taco at all. Honestly I don’t mean to be overly critical, but I would NEVER serve this dish. They should take it off the menu. If I had to do it over, I would’ve asked them to take it away and take it off my bill because it was just awful. I felt that it was fairly unconscionable for them to serve this as a menu item. Regarding the atmosphere, it felt kind of like a country bar because they played country music. I will say that the server did a great job, and she was very pleasant. Excellent service and average food, but the fish tacos drop my experience to a 2.
