The enchilada con queso is next level. You have to get three but it’s worth it. Queso dip with chorizo is really good. Ribeye tacos slap HARD. Overall it’s worth it, flans a crazy goer as well.

Visited this past weekend. Different Mexican dining experience than the vast majority of Mexican restaurants in town. This isn't disparaging against any other restaurant in town as there are MANY Mexican restaurants that are quite good and things have been only gotten better in the last 10-15 years.

Another reviewer called T aha pretentious but I think we're missing the point if that's our take away. Mexican cuisine is definitely on par with the best cuisines in the world and it's refreshing to have a new place here in the city that seeks to give customers a different take on some favorites while using serious and creative culinary techniques in doing so.

Anyone who has traveled to cities like Houston, San Francisco, Chicago, or traveled around within Mexico, etc.. can attest that there are some very excellent FINE Mexican restaurants, in addition to the many delicious local and regional homestyle type restaurants. There is a place for all kinds of Mexican cuisine in this city - simple, cheap, fast, fine, elegant, and/or from different regions.

Recommend we embrace this new dining option. Will definitely be coming back. The Lamb Barbacoa was delicious as were the empanadas de flor de calabaza, the sopes, and the drinks. Service was attentive as well.

Give this a try and come with an open mind and an empty stomach.

You wouldn’t expect to start an upscale dining experience with corn fungus but here I was at this lovely Mexican restaurant near the plaza in Kansas City and I couldn’t resist. The restaurant is self-described as Central-Mexican cuisine with “an American Midwestern connection.”

I was intrigued.

I started my meal with the “Empanada de
Huitlacoche” which consisted of “Heirloom maize azul, huitlacoche, Oaxaca cheese, cream de maize” for $14.

Fine dining lovers says that “Huitlacoche derives from Nahuatl, a language of the Aztecs, which is still spoken in central Mexico. As Aztec farmers discovered blue-black spores overtaking their corn, they did not worry. They rejoiced. It was huitlacoche, which bestows a rich, mushroom-like flavour and makes for an excellent quesadilla filling.”

They were brave because if you see this on corn, at least my first thought would not be Oh let’s eat that and see what it tastes like. But alongside the Oaxaca cheese, it provides a rich smoky earthy flavor. Definitely a lovely way to start off a meal. The maize azul shell complemented the rich earthy textures of the fungus and cheese.

For my main course, I was debating between the Cornish hen with mole and the octopus. My server informed me that the octopus would be a lighter dish, and not being too terribly hungry, I went with that. Let’s just say if that’s his idea of a lighter dish I wonder how heavy the Cornish hen was! The grilled octopus came with roasted potatoes, a roasted tomato, and roasted morita peppers. Alongside it were two cremas with chipotle and tomatillos. As far as Central Mexican cuisine went, this had a Veracruz influence to it and reminded me of my visits there when I used to visit Central Mexico. It was delightfully grilled, but not overcooked. The octopus was tender. The roasted potatoes provided a nice counterbalance to the Kramer and the tomato with smoky paprika and sweet onions along with the peppers.

I was getting quite full after all of this, but I couldn’t resist dessert. It’s really hard for me to choose between a flan and a Tres Leche, on the advice of my server I went with the Tres Leche, which was incredible. The berries were fresh and flavorful, and came with a little carafe of sweet cream to pour over the cake. Along side of Cortado it finished the meal well.

Nice place with great atmosphere, specially with mexican music in the background. Highly recommend the mole enchiladas (particularly the red ones) and the chile en nogada. We were very happy to eat an authentic and really good Chile en Nogada during this time of the year (Mexican Independence). We didn’t really like the Scallop Aguachile Rojo as it wasn’t a true aguachile because the scallops were pan seared and the salsa was just spicy without a lot of flavor.

I ordered an omelette and side of fruit. I’m not one to expect the entire meal free when something goes wrong. In fact I hate to send anything back if it can be avoided. This was unavoidable and inexcusable honestly. My fruit was molded, and I had some of it before I realized. I expected that to be taken care at the bare minimum one would think. The waitress who was okay of course took it back and I told her I don’t want it replaced as that was off putting. She comes back and tells me that the cook said there was maybe cheese on it? From god knows where. Even if that was the case, why? 2nd there was clearly a part where there was green fuzzy looking mold developing on the blueberries. I ask for the bill, expecting the manager to at least come back and apologize for it especially after being told by the cook that it wasn’t what it wasn’t or that it might’ve been but it may have been “cheese”. They took $2.80 off my total bill which was appalling to me just as a whole how it was handled. Very disappointing and I felt quite disrespected by the establishment to be told I didn’t eat/see what I saw that was beyond clear to me. I will not eat here again and I will not recommend this place to anyone either. Word of mouth is some of the best promotion a business can get from previous and hopefully continuing customers. I will not be one of them.
