Hunan Restaurant
In my own way I am living Anthony Bourdain's life. Hunan Restaurant gets a 4 fortune cookie rating out of 5. (This is the spicy range, up to 5.)
The Google star rating was 4+stars so I thought it would be good to try, plus I wanted general tso's chicken which is mentioned a few times and plus it was nearby the hotel I stayed at. Instead of General Tso's, I quizzed the host about one of his top favorites. Chicken with garlic sauce which you can adjust your level of spicy on. At least one of the spicy components was roasted chili flakes. With the amount of fried rice on the side it was the perfect amount for the dish. The rice was on the drier side and didn't have much more than onions in it but it was still good. Especially with the sauce in the chicken. 4 packets of soy sauce came (which I didn't use) and also would have been enough even if I went heavy on the soy sauce. The cuts of the chicken and onions were angular like you see more in Asian cuisines. There was also bamboo, water chestnuts, scallions, garlic, green bell peppers, spicy components, and carrots that looked like the sun on the horizon. See my photo.
Oh- there are almost 3 dining rooms, one of which looked like an 8 person table in a pretty blue room, another flanking it (the round 8 seater is up a platform) and one on the complete other side. I wish I had taken a picture.
There is a fish tank, and the take out is on a rack by the door. There was only one couple in there and I couldn't believe it or maybe they were having an off night. If they did it, it would be a great place for a party on one of the sides. Although there was only one couple at a table, it seemed that the take out was pretty steady.
I also got 4 fortunes with my meal. I always always highly recommend them.
One of the reasons for no 5 star is the takeout leaked through the bag which is an easy fix for them in packaging. There were no utensils but I had a fork on hand (even traveling) and also no napkins.
I would be happy to include this place in my line up of go-tos, if I lived in St. Joseph, Mo.
Hunan is my wife's go to for the Oriental meat sweats! Always good and always on time!

Unseasoned mush. The lack of flavor from all
4 dishes we had was astonishing it was like eating cardboard

This place is one of the best restaurants hands down. The prices are reasonable and the plates are well proportioned. You definitely get your money’s worth here. We go here frequently and they always remember what we drink which is great. The service is great and the people are friendly

Overpriced and the food was awful tasting plus we were missing a part of our order
Very sad as we have tried to like this place more than once
Won’t be ordering from there again
The leftovers of a beautiful meal! Thank you so much for all of the great service and inviting atmosphere. The orange chicken was to die for, and all of the appetizers were killer. Thanks again, and can't wait to return!!

It is my workplace. I am a delivery driver for them
Great service. The food was amazing and they serve you a large portion. Enough to definitely make two meals out of it. And let's not forget the price, the price was excellent, considering the amount of food you get. Have already went back and will most definitely be going again.
Unfortunately had a bad experience with them this weekend. Ordered Hunan Fried Rice. When asked how spicy I wanted out of 4, I went 2 for a nice baseline. Crab Rangoon and Eggdrop soup.
Rangoon was meh. Good but not the best.
Soup the same (no crunchy bits to put in it was a little let down)
But the rice? The rice was a disaster. The portion was generous but as soon as I opened the box I was shocked by how much veg was in it. I've never seen so much carrot in fried rice in my life. Between that and the onions...it was crunchy. Fried rice should NEVER be crunchy. That and it sucked all the flavor out of it...was soooo bland. Zero spice. Zero flavor. Horrible texture.
I tried salvaging it with the extra packets of soy sauce (never had to use those in takeout ever) some hot sauce, even some cayenne pepper. Was not salvageable. Ended up throwing it out and being angry I wasted my money and time. Will not be ordering again unless this was a fluke or new cook or something
Only reason this isn't a 1-star was that the people on the phone and the driver were nice and did their job well.
We had lunch shortly after they opened. I think my generals chicken and crab Rangoon was left over from the night before. Sauce very thick and gummy!
Reasonably priced.. The fried rice was greasy and no seasoning or flavor to it!!! SO BLAND. I've had it twice this year and still the same from last year.. ALSOOO they do give a good amount of cream cheese in the crab rangoon, but it has no crab/flavor in it like Panda Express does.
It stinks inside.
