George and his crew blew my wife and I away. I had meant to go here but finally took the plunge and I am so thankful we did. Definitely a 5 star experience! Steak and shrimp was great and our waitress was a real gem!

It's a very old and tired restaurant with tables that are very close together. The food was good, but not like the other top steakhouses in town. The service was excellent.

My first time there and what a great experience! The steak was really the best I have had in recent months (years?) in the St. Louis area. The service was fantastic - Demitra (sp?) did a great job as our server. The decor and atmosphere is tremendous - classy yet contemporary. We will definitely return!

Bread and broccoli was great. Twice bake potato was microwave quality. Salad was all vinegar.
Had to ask them to turn on air conditioner 3x. Not the quality of a 100.00 meal.

The food is good but the tables were extremely close together and overall the restaurant was too crowded. Wait staff bumped into me each time they passed. Perhaps a weekday night would not be so overcrowded.

Old world charm at its best. I loved this place in the 70s and still do.

In my opinion, this is a tired old steak house that charges market premium prices for marginal steaks and seemingly do not support customers from diverse backgrounds. A very negative experience.

Owner is Rude. Rushed to eat. Steaks were not good and overpriced. Atmosphere is old and carpet smells musty. Don’t spend your money at this dump.

Having lived in St. Louis for many years, I'd driven by the Charcoal House hundreds of times. But, never had the opportunity to eat there. My spouse surprised me by making a birthday reservation. The restaurant is a friendly throw back to a by gone era. Picture walking into a nice steakhouse from the late 60's to early 70's. It's no frills, but very clean and well laid out. There's a nice sized bar to enjoy a cocktail if you have to wait. The menu is straight forward, with a nice selection of fresh steaks and seafood. Wine and drinks were very generous pours. The special for the evening was rack of lamb with a rosemary sauce. It was excellent, cooked exactly right to medium rare. My spouse had the salmon. It was also cooked perfectly. Dee, our server, was phenomenal. She always had a smile, was pleasant and extremely attentive. You could tell she genuinely cared about our dining experience. I've read a few reviews complaining about how the menu pricing has risen. To those folks, I'd say get used to it. Covid changed everything. Dining out is not cheap anymore. Food and people costs have gone through the roof. I found the pricing to be very reasonable, considering the quality of the meal and the service. Family owned places like the Charcoal House are going by the wayside every day. It's a great place just to sit at the bar, enjoy a cocktail or two with an appetizer if you're on a tight budget. You won't be disappointed.

Steak is what you get here. Perfectly cooked filet with twice baked potatoe. Service was great. Wonderful place for a good meal and good friends.

We had not been to Charcoal House for many years. We thought of it as a nice local restaurant but not on a par with the better known restaurants in town. (Tony's, Annie Gunn's or Paul Manno's.) George the owner, certainly thinks it is as good, if not better, judging by the prices shown on the menu. The ambiance is fine although most of the chairs were worn or split. There did not seem to be any concessions whatsoever to ADA. No handicap parking, no ramps for multiple step, multiple door entry. Certainly not enough room for a walker, and definitely not a wheelchair, in the ladies restroom. Additionally, it would be hard for a ADA individual to navigate the dining room given table locations. We are not ADA and did not have an ADA person with us, so perhaps we are incorrect. Maybe they have a special entrance or seating once inside. As a group, we were really blindsided by the prices. They were on a par (or higher) than Annie Gunn's, Paul Manno's, Kreis's on Lindbergh. The restaurant, nor its staff were even close to those venues. An Ultra beer was $6.50, which seems a bit high for a standard domestic bottled beer. A regular bowl of been soup, $10. I would be hard pressed to think it was not straight out of a can. I had a final bill of $61.90 for one beer, one bowl of bean soup, six escargot in mushroom caps ($18 - special appetizer I ordered as an entree.) and my wife's Greek salad. There was also $1.88 surcharge on the bill for I know not what. It was never mentioned nor explained. Our friends had a more traditional dinner consisting of lamb and chicken livers. Both thought they were wonderful but a bit pricy. As our friend said, "I never thought I would be paying $34 for chicken livers." In his favor, the owner, George, went to every table (only 5 or 6) and asked how things were. Rather than have a debate, we just said fine and you could tell he was happy to move on. Other than this review, and as a courtesy to their longevity, we will not be bad mouthing Charcoal House un less specifically asked. I'm sure they have many loyal customers willing to pay the bill. It has been in business too long for it to be the way we felt about it. For our group of four, it is doubtful any of us will ever go back.
