Sado

Sado 5201 Shaw Ave, St. Louis Japanese • $$$$

“A friend and I went out on a Sunday evening to celebrate my student loans being forgiven and her move to a new condo. I made the reservation well in advance and looked over the menu to see what I might want.

We got there when they opened. Our table was right by the bartender in the front area, and due to all the shaken cocktails, it was intermittently difficult to hear each other. We did all right, though, sharing about our lives, mutual friends, and upcoming plans. We had some edamame and roasted Brussels sprouts, steamed buns, and a maki roll apiece. We also each ordered the Chop Shop, a cocktail/mocktail that went towards an employee's top surgery. Always nice to support other trans folks and businesses that behave like real allies.

The price was completely reasonable for what we ordered. It's certainly a place I'll return to when there's something else to celebrate. But I'll try to get a seat away from the bartender.”

Sauce on the Side 4261 Manchester Ave, St. Louis Salad • $$

“Went for dinner with my 4 sisters. We'd had a bad experience the night before at a restaurant across the street and were a little skeptical about a place that focused on calzones. We figured it couldn't be worse and decided to give it a try.

For 5 people, we ordered 1 bite side (spinach artichoke), 1 small salad (Caesar), 1 large salad (Smokehouse), and 2 calzones (Meet me in St Louie and Bull's Eye). We had more than enough to satisfy all and everything was delicious. Yes; everything. We also got 2 deserts - Caramel Apple Pie and the special which was Blueberry Lemon. Those were also delicious and we, honestly, could not finish them.

Very casual atmosphere with great service. If we had stayed in STL longer, we would have gone back.”

“There are not enough stars to rate Katie’s. I needed a place to accommodate a large but unconfirmed number of guests for my husband’s retirement lunch. I spoke with Janelle a few times and she listened to everything I had to say. I was concerned about people traveling from all over and not having a precise headcount. We opted for a reservation in the main dining area and Janelle, Simon and the entire staff exceeded every expectation I could have had. They helped move tables around as more people showed up, they gave great food recommendations and were overall just very helpful and personable. They even treated our group to complimentary tiramisu and ricotta donuts. The mascarpone crema was incredible. I don’t know when we will be back in St. Louis but Katie’s is already on the agenda! Thank you again for such a wonderful experience!”

“This is the face of a VERY happy birthday boy. The driver was professional, and very kind to the children. Multiple people around the area were excited to see the ice cream truck too. He did our party and other sales. How he managed that I will never know. Because the kids were coming in left and right. I was excited that this business had sonic the hedgehog ice cream. But they exceeded my expectation on the variety of treats. We purchased bracelets for our party guests so the driver could know they were with the party. It worked out beautifully. I was actually able to purchase extra sonic the hedgehog ice creams and snocones! I will definitely be using them in the future. Great reasonable price and so friendly.”

White Castle 806 S Broadway, St. Louis Fast Food • $

“White Castle is a St Louis Staple fast food restaurant chain that dates back to over 100 years! A historical favorite! There's a lot of food and drink options to choose from.
I ordered four cheeseburgers with extra pickles, fries, and a large drink to go from this location. After I drove away and started eating, I noticed that the burgers were not fully cooked. They are normally grey through and through, but these were still pink across the middle. I usually like my meat completely cooked. That's just my personal preference. I ate them anyway because I was hungry and had a 30-minute drive. The food was still good overall. Always be sure to check your order before leaving. Lesson learned.

“Sugar Witch is housed inside the historic Carondelet Bakery. Their diverse staff of all genders fosters a welcoming community with every ice cream sandwich they create. Each treat is infused with nostalgia, individuality, and queerness, making every bite a celebration of inclusivity. While all of their ice cream sandwiches are absolutely delicious, my personal favorite is the "Weird Sisters" ice cream sandwich. And yes, while you might read reviews about it being expensive, the perceived expense of their ice cream reflects their use of high-quality ingredients, labor-intensive processes, specialized equipment, energy requirements, regulatory compliance, and small batch production, all of which is underpinned by a commitment to fair staff compensation.”

Adriana's on the Hill 5101 Shaw Ave, St. Louis Sandwich Shop • $

“What a joy it is to walk into Adriana's when there is no line! (RARE!) That would be, maybe, right after opening, or just after the lunch rush, around 2ish, and things are wrapping up.

I like to call in my order, but still have to wait in line to pay. Part of the meal is soaking in the atmosphere of checkered top tables, and a lot of history.

If you like soup, ALWAYS ASK. The minestrone is out of this world. I think the soups change like St. Louis weather, so you never know what it'll be. Chicken pea was the last one I tried and it was just as awesome as all the others.
Everything tastes like mom made it (if she was Italian and a stupendous cook.)

If you haven't been here yet, and I mean YET, get yourself in! They do have veggie options, and other items besides sandwiches, but you really should give the sandwiches a try. My go to is the Gorgonzola dip that comes au jus. If I'm less hungry and wanting something less hearty, Sunny's Veggie is a nice choice. The bread is fresh from the Hill, and you can tell. The sesame seeds once warm on the bread with butter and garlic really send you to heaven for just a second.”

Drive-Thru Restaurants

“Chuck-A-Burger is the last old school 50s drive up burger joint for cruising in STL. They're keeping it incredibly real, and it's easily the very best in at least a 100 mile radius for this very specific culinary experience.

It's amazing, and so very, very specific as a piece of Americana. The cultural connotations and personal memories are generational -- I hope they never close.

I strongly recommend their Vintage Melt -- a class grade BLT with shredded iceberg, two sirloin smashburgers, thousand island dressing, and preposterously melty American and Swiss cheese, on two nicely buttered slices of Texas toast. All served on styrofoam with two napkins, directly to your hot rod door.

Don't miss Chuck-A-Burger; they've reached perfection.”

Woofies Hot Dogs 1919 Woodson Rd, St. Louis Hot Dogs • $

“Woofies is just a really solid hot dog, hamburger, and Italian Beef place.

The dogs are the star of the show. Chicago style and others. Really good hot dogs. The best I've found in STL.

However, don't discount the burgers and Italian beef. The burgers are smash style, and done very well. Classic fast food style, but done very well.

The Italian beef I can't really judge. Its a new sandwich to me, so I can only compare 5-6 other places. Its legitimately very good to me, and I occasionally get it over a dog or burger.

Fries are good, but not amazing.

They have cherry coke, which is relatively unusual and appreciated.”

“My uncle Cass was a waiter at the park Plaza hotel in the 1930's and 1940's and he would be proud that the great tradition of fine dining and service still exists in 2024. FYI. When my uncle Cass was a waiter there back then there was a piano player that wore a plain black tuxedo that played in park Plaza side lobby. His name was liberace. I am a musician in st. Louis in muny opera and fox theater orchestration and in the 1980's I used to play liberace whenever he came to st Louis. Liberace always stayed at the chase then because Sam and Harold koplar owners of the chase gave liberace his first steady job in music biz way back in the 1930's. My uncle Cass gave me an original menu from the restaurant . From 1942. You would love the prices today. I also used to play music in the t room when not playing in the theater orchestras. My uncle and liberace are smiling down on the staff and the great tenderloin room at the chase park Plaza. We also used to play big name acts in the khorrazzann room at the chase. I played the rat pack there along with so many big names in our music business. Enjoy your visit to one of the finest restaurants with real class in st Louis. And remember. The chase is the place. Thank you. Mike buerk. Musician in st. Louis.”

“Wonderful food and service. We had the 5 course dinner with wine pairing and it was very well conceived and prepared, plus the service was attentive without being overbearing. We enjoyed our server who was great at explaining the menu with a fun sense of humor. The flavors were sharp and balanced and the reductions complemented the main feature perfectly. Unfortunately, the fire alarm went off and the staff weren't able to turn it off so there was a lengthy loud period of piercing sound. Absent that it was a really enjoyable evening.”

“Celebrated our daughter’s birthday at Fleming’s tonight. Ordered a medium rare ribeye and it came out medium. They were very apologetic and got us a medium rare one promptly. Excellent food, service, and management. Much better and smarter than J. Gilbert’s who got us a bad steak and wouldn’t apologize if or replace it. They just shrugged. Looking forward to our next visit at Fleming’s despite the rather pricey price tag. At least you get what you pay for there!”

Civil Life was already my favorite brewery, but they went above and beyond to take us under their wing and make everything fun and easy for us when we had one of their casks at our wedding earlier this month! They have cask beers available on draft if you're into cask beer, which is a whole world I knew nothing about but am now very much into after learning more about the cask process/taste difference from Jake, who was so eager to help and share his knowledge. Thank you, Civil Life! ?”

“Although the days of the free A-B brewery tour are over (RIP), it's still a fun experience and a cool look into the history of beer in the largest brewery in St. Louis. Highlights are getting to enter the Clydesdale's barn (which is beautiful and if you're lucky you'll also get to meet one of the Dalmatian puppies that accompany the horses), seeing the old brewhouse with its ornate railings and huge brew kettles, and checking out the enormous modern bottling lines and facility.Of course you'll be treated to some "free" beer along the way and you'll end up in the relatively-new Biergarden at the end of the tour where you can drink a few more beers and get tempted by the aptly-placed gift shop.I enjoyed this more when it was free but it's still a great activity, especially for people visiting St. Louis.”

“I want to start by saying I LOVE GIOIA'S.... However they did something today that is totally wrong. I had placed a four sandwich order with work colleagues. My order was a roast beef sami with AU JUS... with out the AU JUS the sandwich is dry and not very desirable. It was delivered by door dash and the AU JUS was forgotten. I asked for a refund and was told that they are not able to do this as the AU JUS is complimentary. WTF is that !!! You guys are better than this and I would expect for you to make right on a mess up that YOU made. I think it will be a while before I order with my colleagues from Gioias. The Stellar Hog 5623 Leona St, St. Louis Barbecue • $$

“Ive been to the St. Louis location and just visited the Chesterfield location for the first time on Saturday. At 6pm they were pretty much sold out of meats, but I was able to get some ribs and corned beef. I think everything is brought over daily from the St. Louis location, so I imagine it can be hard to estimate business daily. The corned beef was awesome and a nice changeup from the brisket (which was phenomenal at the St. Louis location). The ribs were also stellar but I was pretty full after the corned beef plate. Their plates are 1/2lb of meat which i think is more than the typical place around serves. I am from MA and have tried a lot of popular BBQ places in the area but Stellar Hog has been my favorite by far. I think they could use a spicy traditional BBQ on top of the sweet. The heat level from the bbq pit beans would be great as a sauce. But the spicy alabama sauce is great on the brisket and corned beef. Keep doing what you are doing and dont take shortcuts! nice smoke ring on the meats and the food is hot, not served straight out of the warmer it seems. Two thumbs up!”

The Chef is amazing. He can pretty much make anything you want, the way you (need) it. The specials are really good. Also, there’s more to choose than anybody could possibly want. The food is bought fresh for cooking I heard. I’ve been there too many times for parties and have booked my own parties. They also have an upstairs large dining room for these parties. They have so many different themes going on in activities going on on and on. It’s always different but it’s always makes me feel wonderful the whole package deal. You know what I mean :) The hostess will make sure that you are very well taken care and the staff are very excellent. I also go there for the coffee after dinner! As a suggestion after the band is finish it would be nice and potentially bring in more people if a DJ came in and was set up ready to after the band. or either put a juke box in so the patrons can play music to keep the vibe going after the band. I will definitely be back! Also the food came out a lil slow so maybe that can get better as well.”
