I had the misfortune of dining at Diego's Cantina recently, and it was an unmitigated disaster. Our server, Angela, looked like she just rolled out of bed and put on the first thing she found on the floor. Her apron was filthy, and her shirt was covered in dog hair. But hey, maybe I could've overlooked the slovenly appearance if the service had been decent. Nope.

Angela was surly, inattentive, and seemed put off by our presence. She managed to screw up my margarita order not once, but twice. She also forgot to refill our drinks multiple times and took an inordinate amount of time to take our orders and deliver our food. To make matters worse, she got my order wrong, cold, and it tasted like cardboard.

Chicken and cheese? Are you kidding me? That's not Mexican food; that's an insult to Mexican food. She seemed completely uninterested in addressing our concerns or apologizing for the mistakes.

The only thing that didn't suck was the decor. But who cares about decorations when the service and food are this atrocious? It's clear that the owner needs to step up their game and hire more qualified staff. Servers like Angela are a liability, and it's only a matter of time before they drive away even more customers.

Unless you enjoy being treated like dirt and eating subpar food, stay FAR, FAR AWAY from Diego's Cantina. One star is even too generous for this dump.

The best in STL!!! Plus, Happy hour is a win!! Especially when JEFF is working. Do not hesitate to stop here for vegan and non vegan options tuesday-Saturday!!! Black bean taco, habanero sauce for chips not table side salsa.

3.5 STARS. Caught them on a slow night... prolly not their fault vibe was lacking. Cool looking interior. Food was good, solid Mexican. It's the kind of place that makes me wish I were still a loco drinker. My first trip there was considerably better, as it was much more crowded with a more energetic vibe to go along with the solid fare.

Love the setting for this local Mexican restaurant plenty of vegan options to accommodate all guests. Great bar selection overall would like to see more options on the menu.

When I made the reservation for a high table, I guess I did not realize I would be sitting right next to the entrance of the restaurant. The margarita I had had too much lime flavor in it. The shredded chicken in my burrito was dry. Staff was exceptional by being very attentive and polite!

I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. My pregnant wife and I had a terrible experience here. First, the food was overpriced and tasted awful—nowhere near worth the cost. To make it worse, there wasn’t even any traditional Mexican food on the menu, which was extremely disappointing.

The bathrooms were disgusting, co-ed, and didn’t even have a baby changer. They also charged the host of our party $5 per person for no-shows, which is ridiculous. On top of that, they refused to split the bill among the group and tried to pin the entire bill on the birthday girl. Apparently, they decided beforehand to make it one bill for everyone without notifying the host, leading to a 20-minute argument while we all waited around.

This place is unprofessional, overpriced, and completely lacking in authenticity. Avoid at all costs

Very well appointed Mexican restaurant in University City on North and South just off Delmar.

First, the good news:

The chicken burrito was excellent. The way they prepare the chicken. It’s very moist and really flavorful.

The fajita bowl was also very good. Will definitely be back for that for the flavor and since it’s really healthy.

Now why they don’t get five stars:

Caveat: grew up eating Mexican Food in Colorado. I have very high standards. Someone would call me picky.

I agree with some of the other reviews. The salsa is pretty boring and really heavy on tomato. No heat at all that I could taste.

The chicken burrito comes with rice inside the burrito, which I don’t really like, so I asked for the rice on the side which they were more than willing to accommodate. +
The problem is now the rice needs to stand alone. I found it pretty heavy and ironically really spicy.

No beans with this chicken burrito entrée? Being my first time I ordered a side of beans. They seemed gritty. I’ve only experienced this when the beans are undercooked, but still mashed. Not the creaminess one would expect.

The margaritas were very good but the food was only OK. However the decor and service were great. There are other more affordable Mexican restaurants with more menu options close by; I think I'll stick to them in the future.
