Came here for the first time for a business coffee event. Great vibes, and a cool book collection. The drinks were great too. Will stop by again whenever I am in the Soulard area.

I've been coming to Protagonist for years! Absolutely fantastic coffeehouse and a book lover's dream. Delicious pastries and food, top notch coffee, local artists' wares, AND alcohol if that's your jam. My only wish is that they had more food options!

Peyton always greets me w a smile! She even recommended a new drink to me that I ended up loving. Another person there, I think named Brad, was really friendly too. They make Protagonist one of my fav coffee spots to go to!

Just ok pretty over priced tbh. Service was ok but there was a 20 year old in there talking to customers about partying at a cabin 2 years ago and getting drunk and high... and the customer was older than him.. like what... and the 20 year old acted like it was a flex. Like ok Everything looked or was pre made. The books were old and looked like they were thrift store rejects. Also the neighborhood was weird and a literal clown was walking around..

Protagonist and Antagonist are some of my favorite coffee shops I've ever visited. They know their coffee and everything I've ordered has been delicious. I don't always like to stray from the drinks/foods that I know I like, but every time I've tried something new here I've always been happy I did. Their pastries are just as delicious as their drinks.
Both places have great spaces to meet with friends, or to sit and enjoy the atmosphere.

This place is in a great location. It’s good if you want to be around people while you’re studying or working on your laptop it’s a nice safe crowd. Some other tables are really close together and it’s hard to sit across from someone you have to sit next to them or else you will be pushed up against the person sitting behind you at the next table at the next table. There is a counter you walk up to to place an order then you wait until they call your name when your order is ready mostly self serve cafeteria style Coffee house.

An eclectic jumble of mismatched cozy antique chairs, a grand wall brimming with books, a strange mix of warm, bright, and vibrant cozy colors, this reading spot is peak.
Spinach and Feta quiche was buttery and delicious.
Smaller than the sister store Antagonist, same cool vibe. Here pastries and coffee selections.

I’m really sad because I love this spot. I come a lot on my lunch breaks and the coffee is always delicious… but I ordered a 7$+ four shot latte in a hurry today during break and I got back to sip it only to find it was a Luke warm matcha … I called hoping that they would offer to make me the drink, because whew I needed it! But instead “ so you took someone else’s drink?” No… yall handed me a drink and said my name after I had been waiting for 10 minutes- and everyone before me had already grabbed their drinks … which I didn’t mind the wait because I chose to be there in a rush! I just really was hoping as someone who works in customer service , and comes often, there would of been any interest in helping out with the correct drink given I work 2 minutes away. .

The environment was great and enjoyed the library vibes and plenty of comfortable space to study, work, or read. Not overly loud so it was easy to concentrate. That being said, I had probably the worst chai tea latte I have ever had there unfortunately.
