Our weekly Friday go to for family dinner. The pizzas and the service are always top notch! The hot pop and the veggie are our absolute favs!

Got to try Poppy‘s pizza for the first time today and I am absolutely in love with everything about this pizza and the people who run it. Absolutely wonderful thin crust and well thought out topping combos. Just SO good! Will be back no question.

TL;DR - Poppy pies is likely the best artisan pizzeria in the state of Mississippi.

For the past couple of years, Poppy pies has been a mobile pizzeria that originally started off with several Gozney Roccboxes on folding tables, later upgraded to a food truck outfitted with a bonified, wood-fired Italian pizza oven, and has now graduated to a brick-and-mortar storefront located between Fertile Ground (grab a beer while you wait!) and Pulito.

As of this review, they currently serve three styles of pizza, with the third style only offered on Sundays.

Neapolitan – Poppy Pies does a great job at consistently creating a delicious authentic Neapolitan Pizza. This pizza is the traditional 12 inch pie that has its roots in southern Italy. The outside crust is crunchy on the surface, but soft and chewy in the middle. The center of the pizza is very thin, but soft and foldable rather than crispy. This means its often light enough to eat a whole pie alone – depending on which toppings you get. While all good Neapolitan pizza’s have some leoparding around the outside, I would place Poppy Pies in the top 20 percentile from a char perspective – meaning, that if you don’t like a little char on your crust, you probably won’t prefer this style. But the dough really is spectacular, and so I suspect they are using a pre-fermentation step which adds to the flavor. Poppy Pies has about 7 topping varieties – most of these are traditional combinations like Margherita, Pepperoni, etc. My three favorite specialties are the “Captain”, which pays homage to the southern Captain Rodney’s dip, the seasonally available “Street Corn” that has previously been available in the summer months, and the newly added Burrata.

Detroit Style – If you want something a bit more rich than the Neapolitan, the “Detroit Style” is a deep dish pizza cooked in a metal rectangular pan. The crust is a higher hydration focaccia style bread that cooks in the melted cheese and oil, resulting in caramelized edges that are to die for. The pizza is finished “red top” style with the sauce added after it comes out of the oven. It’s then cut long ways down the middle, then across several times to leave you with 8 square-ish pieces. Our group always fights over the 4 corner pieces.

New York Style (Currently Sundays only) – I was very surprised how much I ended up loving their new NY style pizza. This is a big 18 inch pizza that can be prepared in most (I believe) of the available topping combinations. The Poppy NY Style pizza does diverge a bit from the traditional floppy New York style crust to a more New Haven forward style that is crispier and more heavily charred around the edges. I think the greatness of this pizza is how light and airy it is: Where a large (14 inch) domino’s cheese pizza would be way too much for my wife and I, last night we ate an entire Poppy NY Style Burrata (18 inches or so?) and still felt great afterwards. Yes, it is a little pricey, but so is Sal & Mookie’s NY Style pies – and at the risk of being too honest (senza offesa..), just taste better.

Final Remarks – Eat here a few times and you can tell how passionate the owner and staff are at making really amazing and authentic pizza. Truly a must-visit if you are in the Jackson, MS area.

We had to come try this new pizza place. I had seen pictures on Facebook and it looked so good. I’m very picky and they really worked with me today. I could tell that the owner cares about the quality of every pizza. He convinced me to try something and if I didn’t like it he would make me another one for free. I thought that was really cool. I’m glad I took his suggestion because it was delicious. Also, I don’t know where they get their pepperonis, but it was seriously the best I’ve ever tasted! Loved this place for the food, the service and the cute atmosphere. There was room for my kids to run around and play, so it was an enjoyable experience!

Poppy Pies was amazing! We’re from out of town and didn’t know anything about the local cuisine. Found Poppy on a whim and decided to try it out. It did not disappoint! Their signature pizza, The Captain, is the signature for a reason. Absolutely delicious! Just be aware the pizzas are one size fits all. At 12”, you might have to order two of them to fill your belly. Once you taste them you’ll be glad you ordered extra!

Excellent pizza and a very friendly staff! Another reviewer said it best, not too heavy, not too light... I ate the whole pepperoni pizza in one sitting! Will definitely be back to try the Detroit style. Highly recommend!

The process to order was very easy. The restaurant itself is placed in a cool area that’s got other connecting businesses. I ordered a pepperoni pizza, and it was good!

Parking: There is a free parking lot that is surrounded by a metal fence, directly behind the building. The main entrance into the building is accessible from there.

Kid-friendliness: There is a grass area on the back part of the building that is open

From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with smiling faces and the wonderful aroma of dough, fire, and a good pie! The menu is as simple as it gets, with 2 variations of crust: Neapolitan and/or a thick Detroit-style crust. We went in just to browse but decided to place an order because of the wonderful staff, and why not? Who wouldn’t love a pie later in the day?

After 15 minutes of ‘I can’t decide,’ I finally asked what the most popular pizza was and went with that. The Captain pizza with Neapolitan crust (thin crust) was perfect! Maybe I’ll give Detroit-style a try on another cheat day. :o

After 15-20 minutes, the pie was done, and it looked incredible. You get this sweet, salty, charred bite from the pizza and then pockets of cheese!! It was to die for, and I definitely see why it’s a signature! Give this place a go. It’s definitely worth the drive from Madison. Thank you, guys, and keep up the great work!

Had a Burratta Pizza with jalapeños and one half meat last night. One of the best pizzas that I’ve ever had. Fresh, flavorful and spicy! I highly recommend.
