I knew before I got here that my Spanish would be put to the test. I typed out my order on google translate in hopes the process would go smoother. As I entered the open air restaurant I was the only customer with 4 employees in view. One was sitting down doing stock, two young men late teens early Twenties were seated behind the counter on their phones; they never looked up. I was visibly annoyed by my facial expression and I looked at employee number four, the manager/owner in his fourties’ and he shrugged his shoulders as if to say “what do you want?” So I said “can I order a pizza?” He points to himself and mumbles in Spanish that he’ll take my order. I showed him my phone and read it to him in Spanish best I could and he laughed because Spanish obviously isn’t my first language and then he looked at the two boys while making a joke at my expense. The boys never laughed at all his rude attempts to insult me but instead ignored him. He asked me in Spanish if I was eating it there or taking it with me and I said “to go” which he thought was hilarious and repeated my English to the boys who continued to ignore him. I then asked for the pizza well done and he thought this was very amusing as well but once again he was ignored by everyone except me. My facial expression was speaking volumes. Before the pizza was ready a girl employee arrived. She had brief conversations with the boss who seemed to be filling her in on what she needed to know. My pizza came out and was hand delivered in the “to go” box by the boss/business owner of the year on Cozumel. He said nothing to me, I thanked him for bringing me the pizza, walked to counter, removed my wallet and asked him in Spanish “how much?” This seemed to throw him off and after a slight delay he used a calculator to determine the cost. I did the math in my head of approximately how much the pizza was. His total suggested he had added $3.50 to the price. Why wouldn’t he after his performance so far. I paid him. He wouldn’t hand me my change but instead lay it on the counter, almost reluctantly as if to say I didn’t deserve any change. After doing the math in my head to confirm the overcharge, I put the bills in my wallet and handed him back the 30 pesos in coin and in English said “give it to the boys.” I pointed to them and he stared at the coins in his hand and said nothing. There was no tip jar that I saw but I wanted them to have it. As I turned to leave the girl employee said “thank you.” At least one person in this shop has some manners. So the pizza was actually really good. I’m from Boston/Providence so I’ve had some excellent pies. Nowhere near that caliber but for Mexico it was more than acceptable. Note: I was on the Island 2 weeks and this was the first and only encounter I had of rude, unprofessional behavior. I was in a dozen businesses several times and only received a sincere, friendly attitude. I would recommend the pizza but if your Spanish is freshman year, be prepared to be ridiculed.
