This is my favorite restaurant in town. A couple of times they closed outside of their normal business hours and I was disappointed but if they are open when I get there, I think their food is the best around. Love the red sangria too!

We actually went to the restaurant that started my love for food. Where I learned to cook the perfect shrimp and learned to cook steaks by look and feel rather than time. Gary Hardison was my teacher and started it all. We at at Gary’s Downeast restaurant and the food was amazing as well as the service. I had the yellow fin tuna with asparagus my love had the three way seafood with clams shrimp and scallops and everything was cooked perfectly. Way to go Johnny Griffin, Alton Griffin’s amazing son

So good we went two nights in a row! This is a small local seafood restaurant (with a take-out window) on the main drive through Arapahoe to the ferry. 20+ tables. What a find! I'm a VA 'coastie' so I'm very particular about seafood. Over two nights I had fried clam strips along with lightly breaded shrimp and scallops. My husband had the snow crab, shrimp and clam strips. Everything was perfect. The clams were incredibly tender. I give them 5 stars for the food and 3 stars for management of the waitstaff. The first night was 'all you can eat snow crab' and they were super crowded. Frankly, it was chaos. Took > 20 minutes from when we were seated to get our order taken. However, once the order was taken the food came out very quickly and was hot. The next night was better, but despite the fact that it was Mother's Day they appeared to only have one waitress working. Rachel was great but obviously stretched too thin. We were staying in a nearby RV park and we will be sure to return next time we visit.

My husband and I have been patrons of Garys Seafood for 15 years and have always immensely enjoyed it until tonight. We have to drive 34 miles roundtrip to eat there and tonight it was a grave disappointment. As an accomplished cook, we both ordered the jumbo lump crapmeat appetizer sautéed in butter, which usually is a gastronomic delight, but tonight, was on the verge of spoilage with a strong iodized aftertaste. In addition, I ordered a Caesar salad with blackened shrimp. I was served a large house iceberg salad instead, with blackened shrimp, without being informed there was no Caesar salad available. The waitress should have informed me that Cesar was not available and I would have ordered something else. Needless to say, I went away hungry. I did make the effort to discuss this with the manager, since I want this restaurant to succeed, and noted they usually provide great seafood. It will be a while before I return; needing to overcome tonights disappointment, as I plan a home cooked dinner supplement. A comp was offered by the manager but knowing the financial limitations of the restaurant industry, it was declined and we paid our bill in full with a gracious tip. Don’t get me wrong, I want this restaurant to succeed, but also learn from their oversights tonight. BM New Bern, NC
Maybe an off day?Food was pretty basic, service was not good and water tasted awful.I'll try again in the future bc of the high ratings from others.
