The best fried chicken I've ever had and made to order!! The brisket was so tender and juicy. For our sides we got mac and cheese, hush puppies, fried okra, and yams and they were all so good. 10/10 would highly recommend!!

Down home great competition quality BBQ. The beef brisket and pork ribs are truly amazing. They were delicate, seasoned and smoked to absolute perfection. Kuddos to the pitmaster.

Its just what you expect in a place that focuses on the art of cooking and preparing great tasting food. Small shack and a few picnic tables is all you need. Chicken was crunchy and piping hot. BBQ did not disappoint. Mac n cheese had steam rolling off of it and the beans were extra sweet.

I absolutely see why this place rated so high. Super crispy chicken that was juicy as all get out inside. Brisket sandwich was great also. Hush puppies were perfect. I'll be back here very regularly. Owner is the friendliest man I've met. Chicken is made fresh so it's a little wait but sooo worth it.

Probably the best pulled pork in the area. Sides are phenomenal. You can tell the food is cooked with care and nothing is want for flavor. Such nice people running the place. If you see it, try it. Well worth it.

Do yourself a favor and come here! It's small, and the dining room is outside, but the people alone made our visit great. The friendliest staff you'd ever want to ask for.

I ordered the brisket plate, with mac and cheese and coleslaw. Everything was perfect. She asked me if I wanted barbecue sauce or horse radish with my brisket and I said sure. It doesn't need any of that crap, it was perfect alone.

My wife ordered the fried chicken, we requested two breasts (extra charge), she got the potato salad and fried okra. Again, everything was perfect.

My only suggestion, and I was really surprised they didn't have tea, only soft drinks. I can see iced tea being a huge profit margin, and BBQ without tea?? We had an easy solution, since the chicken is cooked to order and not sitting under heat lamps it takes 30 minutes. So, we walked across the street to Rocky's Hot Chicken and got orntea there (grabbed a slice of their amazing Coca-Cola cake) and walked back over.

The servings were good, check, we didn't finish it all (late dinner)....lol.

Will be back!!

We're in Asheville for a week visiting. This place has THE best fried chicken I have ever had in my life. Im speechless. I can count on two hands the number of food experiences that legitimately changed my life, and Big J's fried chicken is very likely a new addition to that list. I preferred the dark meat to the white meat but it really didnt matter. Cannot express how flawless every aspect of the chicken was. The crunch was outrageous. Super juicy. Salt and flavoring in the batter was perfect. Additionally the best green beans ive ever had.

Just an insane emotional culinary experience. The folks running the place were just the sweetest nicest people as well. Friendly and kind over the phone and in person.

Look, I don't claim to be a connoisseur or expert of fried chicken or classic Southern sides. I'm just a fat kid on a mission to find the best food around where ever I go. And this place was the best food I had in Asheville.

I am from Texas so I KNOW great BBQ and I’m here to tell you this is some of the BEST brisket I’ve ever eaten! It was succulent and so tender you can cut it with a fork! The spicy bbq sauce was also a home run! Even the sides were fantastic! We got buttered potatoes that melt in your mouth plus Mac n cheese, baked beans, and cabbage and they were all FANTASTIC! Even the hush puppies were great! Trust me you can’t go wrong getting bbq here and don’t let the looks fool you, it looks a little dumpy but it is first rate! And the service was also out of this world. They will treat you right!!

The fried chicken was the best I’ve ever had!!

I’ve passed by this place so many times. I never really gave it too much thought. As I drove by today, I saw the place had a lot of people in the parking lot waiting. I now understand why there was a wait.

I only ordered the fried chicken and the pork (which is chopped and I’m more of a pulled pork fan). If you are thinking of stopping in, you might consider calling ahead. Everything that is fried, is fried at the time you order and it’s at least 30 minute for your chicken to fry. As I was waiting, I was talking friend who called me an idiot for not getting the brisket. I hurried in to see if I could order some brisket but they were sold out. Just another reason to come back! From start to finish, the individuals that work there were such nice people. And it was genuine. The chicken is hands down, the best in Asheville.

If they ever decide to make a spicy fried chicken, they would put a certain chicken spot across the road cough… Rocky’s… cough cough… out of business (not trying to throw shade because Rocky’s isn’t bad… But I’m serious…). The chicken from this place was just that good. I put a little Tapatio hot sauce on it and it really took it up a notch. The chicken was Super crispy and super juicy!

The pork wasn’t bad. Again, it’s chopped and not pulled but still pretty good. The spicy bbq sauce is very thick and sweet. I cut it with apple cider vinegar and it was perfect. We didn’t have any sides since we had a lot of things at home. But, now that I know the brisket is that good, I’ll go back SOON, and try some sides along with it. Don’t pass up this little spot. It will surprise you!
