We clearly went on a bad night, so don’t let this review be a reflection on what is supposedly a local institution.

The specials menu said *no sushi* when we arrived around 7 - which was fine, so we adjusted course and were really disappointed to learn after sitting down that the kitchen was also out of beef, pork, and any seafood options. I tried to order 3 different items before finding something that was available.

The service was very slow, and in no way a reflection of the woman serving us, the restaurant was packed and she was apparently the only waiter working. It took about an hour to receive our entrees. We were told the head chef was on vacation. When our food did arrive it was cold.

If the owners are reading this - I know rough nights are normal - but you could have done a much better job of expectation setting. Say something like “we are open with a limited menu tonight!” Or “entree wait time is higher than normal”

I was entering with the expectation that this was a hidden gem, and sadly left very dissatisfied.

Adding to my post that Sukiyaki with Spicy Garlic broth is delicious!
What a gem of a place!! Took us soooo long to try this place as it was always busy. We were attracted by some of the dishes that are less commonly found in the usual sushi places in the US. We tried Sukiyaki and Tempura shrimp and vegetables and they were both delicious. And service is amazing here, our server Stone is friendly, helpful and authentic. The kind of service we associate with Asheville but is missing in many places. Place is small but with outdoor seating which will be nice on good weather days. This is going to be one of our go-tos from now on!

The best sushi I’ve had in Asheville. Tons of delicious gluten-free options! Great place for lunch and an appetizer under $15.

I'm from out of town but hoping here several times. I love that the patio seating allows me to bring my dog. Service is attentive, food is top notch and well priced.

ALWAYS FRESH!! Laura was a great server, and so was the rest of the staff! I’ve been here so many times and finally decided to leave a review. Great time after work. Grab some delicious Sake Tastings and an Edomae Chirashi. It was crowded at dinner time, but I did not feel rushed or uncomfortable. I have also had many different sushi rolls in the past and different appetizers. They have lots of room for different size parties. This restaurant is a hit every time!! Check it out if you’re in Asheville!!

They run out of menus and give them to people who arrived after you.

The food was beautifully prepared and our drinks were good too. Our lovely waitress Ruby did a fantastic job and was very patient with us. Can't wait to come back :3

We loved everything. Stopped in the other day after checking out the menu posted by the door. Subtle delicious flavors, exactly what Japanese food should be! The homemade pickles were outstanding - eggplant, radish, carrot. The ginger honey tea was so light but with perfectly balanced flavor. Our sushi and sashimi as well as the cold noodle dish were some of the best food we've had in Asheville anywhere. Just loved the experience.

My favorite sushi place in town. I appreciate food without coloring added to it and they do that here with their seaweed salad!

Heiwa Shokudo really is one of the best things about Asheville. We have never been disappointed by a meal, and my family has shared countless meals here.

Extremely slow service.
Food was average
Portions were small
Only positive was that it was a mom and pop business.
