Limones Restaurant 15 Eagle St, Asheville Mexican • $$$

“Every single interaction we had at Limones was sincere, intentional, and well executed. We were greeted and given a place to wait in the lobby with an herbal seltzer. Our server Jamie was extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and gave eloquent, robust descriptions of the food as well as his recommendations we requested. We shared the lardo pizza - you should too. This is cellophane thin pork fat rendered just so to melt into incredible cheese and oven fired crust. I would go back for more this second. Every part of our meal exuded that impeccable attention to detail. A ravioli type pasta with ham cornbread and peas was the perfect Appalachian/Italian pairing. The tiramisu was thick, custardy, eggy in the lightest but creamiest way. The pistachio gelato with pistachio syrup was incredible. My only wish would’ve been to try one more dessert but we did make a 9:30 reservation so you roll the dice. That panna cotta sounded wonderful. I could not imagine anyone being less than thoroughly impressed with Limones. My husband was a chef for 20+ years and felt every aspect of a great meal was part of our meal there. 10/10 Limones.”

Huli Sue's BBQ and Grill 1 Page Ave Ste 150, Asheville American • $$

“On Saturday, February 14th, I went downtown for a solo dinner at Huli Sue’s and quickly realized I had completely forgotten Billy Strings was in town for the weekend. Between Valentine’s Day and a sold-out show within walking distance, downtown was absolute chaos. Walking into Huli Sue’s, though, felt like stepping into a well-oiled machine. The hostess (I truly wish I had gotten her name) greeted everyone calmly and kept the flow of guests organized and welcoming. They were operating on a reservation system for the evening honestly genius given the circumstances. Even as a party of one, the wait was about an hour and a half, which I completely understood. Knowing I was craving their food, she suggested takeout. She even let me sit at the table where they roll silverware so I could look over the menu and wait for my roommate to text their order and never once made me feel rushed. While I waited, I watched her run the entrance like an absolute goddess. She was pleasant, efficient, and incredibly organized. Every table being notified was already set, down to water poured and ready. When guests arrived, she greeted them with genuine enthusiasm and walked them to their tables like they were honored guests. Downtown was a madhouse. People kept walking in without reservations, and she calmly explained the wait. When guests were understandably discouraged, she let them know they were accepting reservations for the 15th and I honestly didn’t hear a single person turn her down. She made everyone feel welcome. Despite the cold and the madness outside, the restaurant remained calm and peaceful inside. Even at full capacity, the volume stayed comfortable. The kitchen ran like an orchestra no yelling, no chaos, no stressed staff just teamwork and smiles. I wanted to take a moment to praise Huli Sue’s, their staff, and their phenomenal hostess. They handled what could have been an overwhelming night with grace and efficiency. They already had my business —but after that experience, I’ll make it a point to go even more often.”

“Top three in the restaurants I’ve been to. I’ve had a lot of Filipino food in my life (I’m half and go there sometimes) and this food was amazing. I saw the menu and thought it was pretty neat, but then our server Vic ran through each item and we realized this place was way fancier than it seemed. Everything was authentic, but super fancy. It came out in a nice order and was made perfectly. Notably, the oysters were delicious and interesting and the pork belly was made perfectly. They also had an adobo martini that was an experience I’m glad I had. If you like Filipino food, especially things with vinegar, bagoong, and bitter melon, this place is where you need to go. “Fantastic food. Fantastic service. Lovely ambience in the space. It feels like the kitchen really cares about the food it brings out. One thing I particularly liked was how well all the dishes were seasoned. A bit of heat here, a bit of spice there, and a dash of sweet when needed. And speaking of sweet, the lemon curd cheesecake is a wonder. I love it when the cheesecake part of the cheesecake isn't oversweet. The lemon curd gives a sweet and tart compliment to the creaminess of the dairy in the dish. It's dangerous, I tell you! We'll be back for more.”

We asked him about the damage to Asheville and we could hear it in his voice how hurt he was because others suffered so much. He was very gracious that we chose Asheville to celebrate our birthdays. I had the best shrimp and grits ever and I'm 73. Every meal the fried oysters, salads, Reuben Sandwich there is no negative experience. I hesitated to order the banana pudding but was intrigued by the description. So glad I did, it was so different than what I've ever had but the BEST I've ever had. Do glad we did. \n\nThey were quite full/busy but they fit us in and were very kind and gracious about it. \n\nThe entire experience was special. About four different staff members checked on us throughout our evening. \n\nTheir knowledge of the menu was incredible, and especially their very extensive wine list. \n\nWe started with their “Darling” bread and butter. Absolutely amazing. I would have been happy with just that. \n\nTheir offerings of different locally grown greens was amazing. \n\nWe had the lamb kebabs and rabbit pasta for our main. Our outstanding sever recommended two incredible wines to pair. \n\nAn incredible experience from start to finish.”

We had at least 4 people working with us from the main server, main cocktail person and several others. Each was inquisitive about us and acted as if we were their only table. The food was awesome. Best cornbread ever! I had ribs which were delicious and I supstituted the sides with no problem. My husband had crabcakes which were authentic Maryland style with no fillers and lots of crab. Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse 121 Biltmore Ave, Asheville Japanese • $$$

“If I could give them 10 stars, I would! I took my husband here for his birthday dinner last night, & we definitely felt like we had a culinary experience! The drinks we spectacular & affordable. We did the chef tasting for dinner, & the staff made it like telling a story through food. Our server Jesse G was so personable, animated, made great recommendations, & very attentive to us the entire meal. Okay, so just about the food. We are total foodies, especially on a vacation/for a special occasion like this. We loved unqiue, tasty foods, & occasionally enjoy a more fine dining experience. Our meal at Ukiah was that & more! It was served in 10 small plate courses. They spaced each dish, timed them perfectly, & each dish built on the last in such a way that was truly amazing. Just when we thought the last one was our favorite, the next one was as good or better. The vanilla, almond, coconut cake with house ice cream finisher almost wrecked me lol! I could have licked the plate clean, but I was honestly too full to commit that hard. Every staff member that brought us a dish, refilled our drinks, cleared our table, etc were so friendly. Jesse (funny enough, also my husband's name & same spelling) was one of the best waiter's we've had, but also the kind of person you just want to be friends with after you eat & go hang out at the bar or something. It is definitely a higher end restaurant, but for the experience & service, it is well worth the money! We hope to return some day for sure!”

If you love beer or cocktails and you need an early dinner, this is a great happy hour. You can get a huge chicken sandwich that tastes high quality for $9 or a delicious burger for $12. Drinks range from $3 - $10. They have plenty of cocktail and beer options during the happy hour as well. The only thing I wish they did was a red and white house wine with the happy hour menu as well. Other than that this is perfect for people who want a fancy delicious experience without the high price tag.

The happy hour definitely made me want to come back for the full dinner menu! I will 100000% be back.”

“Couldn’t rave about this place more. The food was insane - every bite we had - we kept going back for more. The cabbage pancake was bursting with flavor, the seafood dip was awesome and the crackers took it over the top - but the nuggets were just out of this world. So flaky, seasoned to perfection - and the sauces - we couldn’t get enough. Truly could have stayed there all day, listening to the music and looking at the decor. Such a rare spot and so jealous this is an every day lunch spot people can enjoy anytime. Can’t wait to get back!”

“Food is fantastic.
You order at the counter and then find a seat. No wait. Server brought it out quickly after we sat down within a few minutes.
Biscuits are large and fresh with a nice crust outside, lite and fluffy inside. I had the classic, 2 eggs, (over easy), fried potatoes (crispy and not greasy),all three meats (country ham — leaner than spiral, more salty, but good! Chopped sausage — tye good kind that looks like a smash burger. Very lean, good mix of herbs and spices. The bacon was lean, thick, crispy). Plate had a radiccio, friesse and radish salad.
Topped it off with a cortada — great meal to start the day.

Nice place in door or outside.
Recommend solidly!”

“My wife and I have made it a holiday tradition to dine at The Original Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian every time we visit Asheville. If you’re looking for a meal that feels genuinely authentic and welcoming, this is the one spot you absolutely have to visit.\n\nThe Food We started with the house-made fried mozzarella sticks, and I’m not exaggerating when I say they are by far the best I’ve ever had. For the main course, I had the sausage, peppers, and onions, while my wife went with the twice-baked lasagna. Both dishes were delicious, high-quality, and more than enough to satisfy a hearty appetite.\n\nThe Service We did have a small hiccup getting a table when we first arrived, but the manager was excellent. Once the issue was brought to their attention, they stepped in immediately to make sure we were seated and taken care of quickly.\n\nOne Quick Tip The only reason I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is the parking. It’s notoriously difficult to find a spot nearby, and since they do not take reservations, you’ll want to arrive well ahead of time to account for the hunt for a parking space and the likely wait for a table.\n\nIt’s a local favorite for a reason—totally worth the extra effort!”

The downstairs space has a unique atmosphere and is definitely worth checking out. The beer was excellent, and we opted for a flight so we could sample a variety of styles. While a flight costs a bit more than ordering individual pints, it was well worth it to try several of their tasty brews.

“There was a wonderful variety of items to choose from, it was difficult to decide. We would have gotten the jalapeño fries and cauliflower tacos but their main frier wasn’t working so we got the chorizo tacos, coconut curry and sweet potato Ruben which came with crispy homemade fries (they have a small frier that was working). We don’t enjoy vegan cheese that is made using Science so we opted for the cashew queso which was absolutely delicious. The tacos were our favorite item. The texture and taste were a solid 10 out of ten. Which made me miss trying the cauliflower tacos even more. The Ruben was our 2nd favorite. I usually have tempeh meat on a Ruben so I couldn’t imagine how they could make sweet potato taste “meaty” but they did. It was so delicious, I will be looking up how to make that “sweet potato meat” at home. The Thai Panang Curry was the only disappointment. It was fresh tasting and the tofu was fried to crispy perfection. It just needed more sauce. I got the Blackberry Ginger Mint mocktail. It was just the right amount of sour and was a beautiful presentation. Our only regret was not leaving room for dessert. If we lived in Asheville we would be regulars at this establishment. Our server was also Excellent! She was attentive without being intrusive. She pre-bussed the table and refilled our water glasses and asked if we needed another round and brought us our food perfectly timed! We went back the next day and had the Tostada Enchilada salad (it’s the choriso taco grown up), the Supreme pizza with no cheese (nice crispy crust and a good amount of sauce), the Amaretto Cherry Cheesecake (absolutely worth going back just for that!) the peanut butter cookie (the only disappointment) and the Lime Aid (perfecly balanced and not too sweet). But I preferred the one yesterday. Another wonderful server. Love this place! Updated from previous review on 2025-03-02”

“What a great place to celebrate our birthdays. Two from KY and two from Augusta GA to enjoy celebrating all four of us having birthdays. Stuart who waited on us was EXCELLENT. Thank you to everyone working that day on 1/22 that wished us Happy Birthdays and made this such a wonderful memory for all 4 of us. Very welcoming, great personalities but above all GREAT FOOD.”

She snapped at me that I hadn't ordered one- even though we had had a discussion about flavor of jelly- to which she replied "whatever". As she marched away I said to my daughter that I guess she didn't want her tip. She did bring the biscuit and did try to be overly nice, which felt very insincere., almost sarcastic. “We had dinner here last night after a movie. I honestly don't think I've ever had better service in my 70 years! The drinks, an Old Fashioned and Manhattan, were some of the best I've had and I consider myself an Old Fashioned connoisseur! The prices are high but no higher than other restaurants. We are locals and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!”

“Visit on holiday package. Breakfast was fabulous well plated and delicious. Thanksgiving dinner was plated in an unappetizing manner with food smashed up in domes next to each other with cranberry sauce ( not good for diabetic)poured on top of everything. everything was lukewarm and gravy had no flavor. I requested a new plate and received 2 plates with everything in separate bowls still lukewarm. Felt like a snub from the Chef for commenting on plating. Lady next to us had a beautifully plated steak. If you can't do a well plated turkey dinner don't offer it as an option.”

It was an extremely welcoming evening from the start to the finish. The owners and management were awesome to work with and delivered everything that they promised and more. They provided a DJ for us (DJ Abu Dissarray), which made the evening even that much more fun. Many of the event-goers had not been to either of these bars, but I heard from many folks that they planned on going back due to the friendliness of the staff and the treatment that we received.
