Our server services were horrible. Food didn’t have any flavor, not even close to Mexican food! NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!!! The only good thing was that they make the dish look decent but the food is horrible. I got out of this restaurant directly to the pharmacy because I started to get stomachache.

I ordered a protein bowl and my husband ordered barbacoa tacos. I got chips and house salsa too. My bowl was cold and the chicken was tough. The chips were over cooked with okay salsa for $8.

This place consistently delivers tasty food that works with our family’s dietary restrictions and the wait staff are awesome. Try the brisket tacos!
Food was 10/10, our server Gus was excellent. Great restaurant, should be more than a 4.5 average.
Edit: still love this place, but seriously on a Sunday when there's only 3 people in the entire restaurant, why do we need to sit everyone within 2 feet of each other???? Spread people out, make your guests comfortable... this happens every time. Bringing down my review a star because this happens EVERY TIME. I usually have to ask to sit somewhere else, but most people aren't comfortable doing that

What a complete waste of money. Food was bland, they charge you $4 for a glass bottle of coke so obviously no refills. Also don't tell you that ahead of time. Came with my family of 6 and was charged for a large party. In total we got two kids meals of chicken tenders and another a kids quesdilla. A total of 4 street tacos and two adult meals THE TOTAL WAS $160....... This was such a complete waste of money it's unreal. We paid and didn't complain but I will NEVER return. Go to an actual Mexican restaurant and get some quality real tasty food.

Best bean dip I have every had. Best jalapeño bread bites. The Carne Esada was expensive but not too expensive to stop me from trying it out and it was fantastic. Medium rare steak, brussel sprouts, beets, potatoes, some peppers.. all cooked together.. I forget which hot sauce I had because the waitress brought all three for me to try, but one of them just perfectly complimented the food. The heat of the sauces do not set your mouth on fire, they are only spicy in the back of your throat.
I had the margarita flight, it was the only thing I was not impressed with. I expected a much bolder taste, especially from the blackberry marg. I was told one of them will set your mouth on fire, But it did not. Their house margarita is probably one of the best in Asheville, though.
I need to go sometime and try the salsa bar and the burrito bowl/tacos.
I would definitely return, I have already told people about the location.
Parking: Free to park after 6pm and free on Sundays.

First time at this restaurant in downtown Asheville. The indoor and outdoor dining areas are nice and the service was excellent. The food however was completely unremarkable. Not really bad or good, just kind of there.

I had a..... different kind of carne asada.
The menu's multiple items have things i am allergic to.
It was... a thing, I guess?

Super overrated. Drinks are good, food is pricey for what it is— $20 for a burrito bowl plus and extra $2 to make it a burrito. That is WILD.

delicious food, beautiful atmosphere, knowledgeable and helpful staff, and the most AMAZING tequilas and mezcals I've ever seen in one place! thank you for your hospitality during the snow, we enjoyed ourselves so much!
Edit after the business response:
I appreciate the response. However, I did question the server on why I could only choose beans as the filling & why I couldn't have beans & rice like any other Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. The server told me there were no substitutions, contradicting the business response.
I also understand the downtown prices are expected to be higher. However, with such a drastic price difference also comes much higher expectations. The quality of a $10-12 plates in other more expensive city downtowns is much better compared to the $17-24 plates we got at Mountain Madre. Just facts. Hopefully this dialogue helps the food & flexibility improve even if the prices don't.
Original review:
This place is a tourist trap. The prices are outrageous & the taste is bland. The enchiladas I ordered were "pre-made" with no substitutions and with it didn't come with beans like at every other Mexican place (just rice & some corn) it made sense because the ONLY filling in the enchiladas were beans.... No veggies, nothing. Bizarre.
The taco salad was like soup. The salsa was bland and didn't come with the food.... We had to beg for a small side of salsa without paying because each plate was $17 - $24 and didn't include salsa/guac?!
This is a place run by someone who either doesn't know what Mexican food is, doesn't care about quality and/or hasn't been to a properly run Mexican restaurant (I've been to 100+ run better for 1/3 the price). For just 2 mediocre plates and some expensive chips & guac (AGAIN NO SALSA?! they wanted like $7 more for salsa omg) I paid more than if I'd gone to a good Mexican restaurant and gotten 4 margaritas (we had waters because we couldn't afford paying for drinks after the expensive food), but it's ok a place with poor food probably doesn't have good margarita.
Unfortunately the service was great but couldn't make up for the terrible experience.
Also we were sat in a cold corner near the door when there were DOZENS of tables in a bright, warm area.
Won't be back.

Everything was sooo good! My only complaint was that I paid $13 for a margarita that tasted great but was mostly ice. The cup was not big to begin with and was full of ice! Come on guys you need to do alittle better than that. Eating out is not cheap to begin with and I always try to tip good but damn! I paid $26 dollars for what would maybe equal 1 drink.

Excellent cuisine, fantastic bar, perfect location. Locally owned, definitely an Asheville favorite!
Quick trip to Asheville! We own a restaurant so food is always a big part of our travels. We came in for lunch on a Tuesday and sat at the bar. Thalia was the bartender and she is lovely. Everything we had tasted very fresh and certainly made in house. The street corn is better than any I’ve had before. Very different presentation and topped with fresh pico. Five out of five… no question.
