Recess Coffee and Baked Goods

Yall. Simply the best pastries and coffee I’ve had in quite some time! Went to Black Mountain to celebrate my birthday with my daughter & sister. We ordered one of every pastry and had a taste test of 3 items and took home the rest. THEY WERE AMAZING!! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, the staff friendly and attentive, and the pastries tasted like they came from a French pastry shop. Will definitely be back soon!

The staff was so friendly and welcoming and seemed to be having a good time at work! I got the praline éclair and it was absolutely delicious! We also got the bacon egg and cheese croissant and it was so flakey and savory! 10/10 recommend and will be back soon!

My wife and I randomly dropped into Recess today on a whim as we visited the area. There was a line out the door at 11 am on a Sunday morning! I’m glad we stayed in line, as the coffee and pastries we got were well worth standing in line for. Today was apparently a Halloween themed week, where all the pastries were inspired by Harry Potter, which was a fun special touch. Also, we got a freshly baked loaf of sourdough bread to go, which was nothing short of amazing! And to top it off, the employees were super friendly, including the store owner, who chit chatted with us for a minute as she prepared bread for the next day. Whenever we come back to the Black Mountain area, we will definitely swing by Recess for coffee and pastries!

We happened across this place on our anniversary (today on Halloween) - after leaving another bakery that was not up to par. This place was far, far better than anything I had imagined.

To start off another kind patron had gotten the last three loaves of focaccia bread & upon hearing focaccia is my favorite gave me one of the last three loaves so that I could have one to buy.

We got the bacon croissant with egg & cheese along with a quiche. My wife had a coffee while I had a Chai.

Everything was phenomenal — the service was fast and friendly, the food was excellent & the drinks were as good as I’d expected. I will be back - likely tomorrow morning for a coffee & pastry.

My only feedback for service: maybe doing a number system and having your staff run items to the table? I was sitting outside once and I guess my name was called inside.. my order had been sitting on the counter for a while, my coffee was cold... It wasn't very busy at that time... but just a thought!

Oh. My. Word. New favorite coffee shop when visiting Black Mountain! My husband and I just spent the weekend in Black Mountain and discovered Recess. The space is cozy and inviting, the coffee was perfect and the monkey bread was delicious!
