Wheelchair accessibility: Three steps up to a narrow, uneven path. Four more steps up to the porch entry. I would not consider this wheelchair accessible.

Had a great dinner. Six of us sat outside on the front porch. The waitstaff was nice and attentive without hovering. The food was great. It’s Southern home cooking but elevated. We all ordered something different and everything was a hit. The only one that wasn’t loved by us were the collards. They were tasty and I’ve never had collards with Indian spices in them before but they seemed to clash with the other flavors on the plate. Next time I’m in Boone I will definitely go back.

We had reservations but because of the rain limiting their seating options, our seat time was pushed back. They were very gracious though and honestly it was well worth the wait. Food was delicious and fresh. The ambiance was very cozy. Highly recommended!

On a recent visit, I had the pleasure of trying their catfish, accompanied by classic Southern sides like mac & cheese, greens, and fried green tomatoes. Each dish was a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to authentic Southern cuisine.
The catfish was perfectly cooked—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a subtle seasoning that complemented the fish without overpowering it. The mac & cheese was creamy and rich, with just the right amount of cheese to make it indulgent without being overly heavy. The greens were flavorful and well-seasoned, providing a nice balance to the meal. The fried green tomatoes were a standout, offering a tangy, crunchy contrast that was simply delightful.
What truly sets Proper Restaurant apart is its ambiance. The moment you step inside, you’re enveloped in a homey, welcoming environment that makes you feel like you’re dining in a friend’s kitchen. The decor is charming and understated, with a rustic flair that perfectly suits the Southern comfort food on the menu. The staff is friendly and attentive, adding to the overall feeling of warmth and hospitality.
Proper Restaurant is a must-visit in Boone, whether you’re a local or just passing through. The combination of excellent food, friendly service, and a cozy atmosphere makes it a standout dining destination. I can’t wait to return and try more of their delicious offerings

What a delicious surprise in the heart of beautiful Boone! We are 9,600 miles and halfway into a yearlong road trip and this wonderful restaurant instantly has become our favorite discovery. From the homey welcoming vibe to the chill servers to the excellent, fresh southern fare we were blown away. Located in an old jail it still exudes a homey vibe with exposed brick and beams and warm lighting. As a vegetarian my choices often are limited, but here I hardly could decide given the vast selection of southern sides to go with the tomato pie I ultimately chose (cheesy on a biscuit crust. Incredible!). My partner loved the chicken and dumplings and our friend said the perfectly fried catfish was the best she has had. We ended with biscuit-like peach cobbler and the sweet-tart rhubarb pie. Best we ever have had. Chef and owner Angela Kelly obviously creates her dishes with love. After 6 months on the road this felt like eating in the home of a good friend. I wish we were going to be here longer. Will definitely eat here again next time we visit Boone.
