Food is great. They have lots of vegetarian and gluten-free options. Price is cheap nice atmosphere to dine.
We were in DC and wanted to pick up some Sambusa and discovered Habesha market. Restaurant with a mini market where you can pick up some spices, breads & injera. Also, have a prepped food area where you can get combo orders-various types of Wot with veggies that are ready to take away. The Beef Sambusa had a perfectly seasoned filling. We got one of the the Veggie to try and it was ok. We ended up picking up some Kitfo which was excellent! Perfect amount of seasoning and not too much of the spiced butter and portions were generous. Service was friendly and attentive.
I've eaten here many times. I recently went after being in town with my family and it is still as good as it always is. When speaking to people about where they go for authentic food Habesha almost always comes up. There is a wide variety on the menu but I have a method that works for me. I typically will order one of the vegetarian combo platters (I am not vegetarian but there is a good selection and the food is excellent). I will then order additional meat dishes specifically (quantity depending on how many people I am with). I simply don't know the specifics of all the dishes so this allows me to get a solid foundation of things that I know will please while allowing me to venture out with individual items as my knowledge base grows. Platters are typically served on a central dish so getting a whole combo platter won't necessarily allow me to know which dishes I enjoy and which dishes I should pass on in the future. Pricing here is good and the food is generally served fairly quickly. The interior of this place shows the wear and tear of a place that has been in DC for quite some time. It is not brand new and flashy but the food is good and priced accordingly. I know that parking in this neighborhood can be difficult. It is definitely possible to park within a couple of blocks and to make the short walk to the front door. If you insist on parking at the front door this place may not be the one for you to visit.
They make Ethiopian food so well here!! The portions are large and fresh. They also have lunch specials at great prices. I love all their dishes, but my favourites are: Kitfo and Dereq Tibs.
I bought take-away Lunch at Habesha Market and Carry Out located at 1919 9th St NW, Washington, DC, USA. The Restaurant has a simple layout and offers Ethiopian and American Food. We ordered two sets of Habesha’s Tibs with injera and an Egg Sandwich. This is the first time we tried Ethiopian Food the sour dough injera didn’t goes well with our taste bud and we didn’t quite enjoy the food.
Here in DC with my wife on vacation. We went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend and we were not disappointed. Got the combination platter. The food was excellent, a little spicy and very tasty. very reasonably priced. Portion so large we could not finish.
In town visiting friends and we decided we would try Ethiopian Cuisine for lunch. We picked a restaurant and sent for an Uber. Things did turn out the way we planned when the Uber driver stopped in an alley and said this was our location. He refused to figure out why we ended up in an alley and waited for us to exit the vehicle, he then sped off leaving us in the rain. We then found that Habesha Market was within walking distance. We arrived and were helped deciding what to order. We ordered two combo platters and they placed it on a sing tray for us to share. The food was delicious and was a great way to try Ethiopian Cuisine for the first time. Great food, great friends, and a local Ethiopian dive makes for an excellent lunch in Washington D.C.
Freshly prepared and always delicious. A very helpful and friendly staff who make each experience special. Love this place!
Great food, you get very large portions and the staff is super helpful in helping you pick out. It's not fancy, but cheap, and everything is freshly made. Highly recommend for more adventurous foodies/travellers

My wife and I were in DC for a day trip and decided to get some Ethiopian ingredients. We stopped at Habesha to pick up some Berbere and Mitmita and decided to stay for lunch. The place was hopping as it was lunchtime and the seating is limited. We ordered the lamb tibbs and the FerFer. It took a while for the food to be ready (they give you an electronic buzzer that announces when your food is ready). the food was served Ethiopian style, on an injera with two injeras on the side. If you've not eaten Ethiopian food before, there is no silverware, you tear off pieces of injera (a large flat bread made from teff) and use that to scoop up your food. Anyway the food was excellent and well worth the wait and the walk. Bonus, you can buy packages of injera at the market as well.
This place is sorta "hole-in-the-wall-y" but it's amazing. It's counter serve style, and you can see them cook in front of you. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because there's no wait staff/you have to clean up after yourself. The eating area isn't the cleanest, but that's what you get with a hole in the wall spot. The food is on point, though. the Doro wot and key-wot are my favorites! The Lattes are really good too...and there's quite a bit of caffeine in them too, btw.
My wife and I were looking for a place with good Ethiopian food at a good price. Reviews on other sites were kind of mixed and in some cases wrong. Yes, they do have beer and wine. I would describe the place as fast casual Ethiopian without pretentions. Order at the counter, and you're given a pager that buzzes when your order is ready. Plenty of inside seating, alot of locals seem to eat there. Portions are large! Staff was very helpful guiding us on our food choices. We'll be back the next time we're in DC.
Habesha Market has a small menu, but the food is delicious and prices are reasonable. Order at the counter and pick up from in front of the kitchen. The market also sells other Ethiopian goods like spices and coffee.
I loved their food, always have. I love the different dishes and the way it is presented, easy and fast for Ethiopian food. They have a great system going. yummy.
