Love this place! It's my favorite burger around CH/Carrboro.

I was working in the Chapel Hill area today and decided to stop in for lunch, and I’ve got to say—this was hands down the best burger I’ve ever had. I highly recommend spending the extra $4 for an additional patty, and if you’re a fan of sweet potato fries, don’t skip the winnie sauce. The service was outstanding, and the atmosphere was top-notch. I’ll definitely be coming back sooner rather than later!

Quality burger/sandwich and fries place! I actually got their turkey burger to switch it up this time and it was pretty good! I would probably prefer the normal hamburger patty, but still enjoyed the other. They also have grilled chicken and a black bean burgers. Their sweet potato fries are SO GOOD. They are salty with a little sugar sweetness. I do wish a side (fries of some sort) came with the burgers, but you do have to order them separate. In total my meal was $16.50 before tax, which I feel is pricey for a burger and fries- but they taste good so it’s fine. The staff is friendly and nice. They have indoor (pretty limited) and outdoor seating which is great for a new sunny day. Overall this is a great place for a quicker meal!

Really nice small burger joint with good food and shakes. Outdoor seating if the weather is good, otherwise its limited indoors. Always good to go though.

Immediately after my college buddy, who also is gluten and dairy free, picked me up from the airport, she took me straight to the Al’s Burger Shack (on market Street - the Southern Village location). Not only are these folks, very conscientious and careful about keeping things gluten-free, including a dedicated prep area and fryer in the kitchen, but the burgers and tots are absolutely delicious!
Definitely will go back when I am in NC again!
Good food and good service. The dining area is pretty small luckily there weren't many people in there because it was too hot to eat in the outdoor dining area.
The manager was very rude to me because I declined to leave after 30 minutes and before I had finished eating to make room for a family that wanted a booth, even though there were other tables available. She only pressured me to leave, not the other customers that arrived the same time I did and were also seated at a booth. I emailed the owner directly about this incident and didn’t receive a response so I’m making others aware of what happened.
Tacit discrimination isn’t acceptable in today’s society. Understand that this is the type of people you’re supporting when you patronize this business.
Absolutely Yummy!!!
TL/DR version - not worth the effort - Al's does not live up to the hype. Not bad, but no better than average. I have a much better experience at lower cost diners down in Pittsboro or up in Mebane.
Al's Burger Shack was fine, but just fine. I could get the same burger pretty much anywhere for a lower price and free sides like French fries.
Atmosphere? Overly loud country music, 3 booths and one small table jammed together. Parking was OK.
Maybe the other locations are just great, but the Southern Village location, I'd pass on it

For all the hype and price it was a mediocre experience. I would not go back if it was free. Atmosphere was not great, with a tiny indoor dining area jammed with three booths and a small table with some mediocre forgettable country music blaring as loud as an airplane taking off. Sides with your burger? NOPE, you have to pay extra for that. Quality of the food was on par than one can get at any diner in the region, just more expensive, no sides and a very generic atmosphere. Service was OK, although the servers lacked any kind enthusiasm for their work.
Al's burger shake is amazing! I recently used them for a large (about 100 meals) catering order. They were very accommodating and delivered to Raleigh for us. The burgers were fresh and delicious. This order was for teenagers and the staff. They boxed each meal individually and added chips, dessert, condiments and a drink. It was perfect! They also took our request for gluten and dairy free orders. Everyone enjoyed with there meals and complimented the food! If you're thinking about a catering order with Al's Burger Shake do it!! Thank me later! 😊
I've ordered from this location before and didn't have any issues so this may be a one-off. I ordered medium rare and I would hardly call this thing cooked at all. Bit of a bummer.
Wasn't asked how I wanted burger cook and it was raw in spots.
I didn’t appreciate the manager trying to pressure me to leave because a family wanted the booth I was dining at. Mind you, I had been there for less than an hour and there were plenty of tables available outside. There was another booth being occupied by a couple that had been there for the same amount of time yet the manager chose to single me out specifically. When I politely declined to leave she returned to loudly say “I don’t know what she’s going to do,” to the family, obviously intending for me to hear her as well. I found it rude and unnecessary. Use assigned seating if you want to reserve booths for large parties. I paid to sit in that establishment and enjoy my food the same as that family and I don’t appreciate that I was being expected to interrupt my own dining experience to accommodate them. I highly doubt she would’ve been pressuring them to leave if I was the one waiting for a table. This is no way to treat someone supporting your business.
