While in the Charlotte area, I looked up places to eat breakfast and I came across this restaurant since it had pretty good reviews. When first coming in honestly I didn't feel welcomed from the young lady at the desk. She just asked where would I like to sit at. She didn't specify or tell me that one side is like self serve and the other side you will have a server/waiter, that would have been nice to know especially since it was my first time but I learned that information from asking another staff member at the coffee side once I realized which side I chose, while waiting to be waited on since I wasn't given a menu or anything. While sitting and watching I did notice how some others that came in were greeted by the same young lady at the door which is why I couldn't give 5 stars. However, to the good part. I'll upload a picture of what I ordered but I can honestly say these were the best cheese grits I ever tasted so far, I could eat it by itself! My food was a 4 1/2 and thats only because the potatoes tasted funny (sorry I can't explain this better) other than that my tea was good, and the rest of my food was good. I just wished the service, feeling more welcomed, just some type of advice/explanation kinda just something for someone that is new to the restaurant which I was sure to mention for that reason when coming in. So, hopefully that is better next time because I have to go back again for those grits. Hopefully, I can edit this review and/or update with a better experience.

What a lovely experience! The hospitable staff are kind and efficient. The food is well-presented and delicious. I was so moved by learning the testimony of this organization and the people it employs. What a blessing! Thanks!!!

Highly recommend! Delicious food in a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The whole staff were so friendly and polite! We brought our small baby and they were very kind and accommodating. The steak and eggs was the best I've ever eaten. We no longer live in Charlotte otherwise I would eat here all the time.

I haven’t done the sit-down experience, but I love the cafe! I enjoyed everything and the staff is wonderful. My only complaint is that they aren’t open on weekends!

Community Matters is such a special piece of Charlotte. Their heart warming and inspiring mission brings customers through the door, but it’s the incredible food, fresh pastries, great drinks, and super friendly service that keeps us coming back. Be sure to try the BLT and Brussels — it’s next level :) thank you community matters for consistently being as phenomenal as you are, Charlotte cherishes you!

If want to dine at a restaurant in Charlotte where your money goes to a great cause go to Community Matters Cafe! This is the restaurant for Charlotte Rescue Mission where they give back to the community and provide a second chance for men & women to be productive in society. God doesn't give up on us when we go off track in life and this place doesn't give up on individuals. With a mission like this I go here once a week for breakfast!

Community Matters Cafe has a new menu for every season of the year. I highly recommend getting the Classic Cafe Breakfast with the sides being bacon & Brussel Sprouts! Also the egg sandwich is great as well! The new seasonal item i had for breakfast is the Pulled Pork Johnny Cakes which tasted great! B

Service was friendly and they have great staff as well who will take care of you!

Wow! I did not have a good experience at this place. I am a remote worker, wanted to get some coffee and breakfast while checking some emails before taking some meetings at home later, and this place was highly recommended. As soon as we walked in, the environment was already a bit unwelcoming and the barista taking our order was short with us. Once we got the coffee we ordered, the extra hot drink didn't have a sleeve on it so we had to ask for one because it was too hot to hold.
We decided (against our better judgement) to go ahead with our plan to order food so we were seated, and sat for a long while before being able to put an order in — seems like the waitress may have forgotten we were there or not have noticed. My partner had just travelled a couple hours really early in the morning and so went to the bathroom to change their shoes and pants, and a waitress followed them and checked on them, maybe thinking they were doing something suspicious?
Once the food came, we were surprised to see the focaccia de jour had pork on it, and unfortunately my partner doesn't eat pork (our bad, we should have asked, but we also weren't told anything about what it came with, and the menu only said olive oil — which it didn't seem to have either). We waited ages for a server to come to our table so we could ask for something to replace it, like regular toast, and then another few ages for that to get to us. At the point that it did, it was nearing the time I needed to leave, and my partner was feeling extremely uncomfortable and anxious and so I went ahead to the host's stand to ask for to go boxes and to go ahead and close the check — it probably would have taken another 20 minutes to wait for someone to come to our table again.
If you're visibly queer or dress alternatively, I don't recommend coming here. I don't usually have any issues with either of these things in Charlotte, but the entire time we felt so incredibly judged and got constant stares from not only all of the staff but also the other customers. Service was not great, slow, and not very attentive. Did not come to check on us except to give us the check. I do appreciate that they removed the focaccia from our bill since my partner was not able to eat it. My partner did enjoy the french toast I ordered, but I was overall disappointed by the food and did not really like it much. The one positive interaction I had was with the host, who was very attentive, helped me get the boxes, and greeted me with a kind smile and was polite. Everyone else in the entire cafe made us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome.
I do think the mission of the cafe is lovely and it seems like they have provided some great experiences for many customers, but unfortunately our visit was disappointing.
