This place is a prime candidate for one of those fix'er upper shows- especially considering how few historical locales exist here in Charlotte AND the growing popularity of this particular area. I'd love to see Gus' get a makeover and become a neighborhood hub, but as it stands it is simply falling apart and generally unmaintained. The food was ok, the staff was friendly, but I get the sense that owners are just waiting for the opportunity to cash out on the property and so why bother with any updates? I would be SO happy to be wrong- maybe a visit from 3 spirits is in order but please fix this place up so we can all enjoy a vintage but well loved & maintained piece of history and not another demolition & condo. I see great potential for a classic diner here just need to put in the effort.
Best fried squash I have ever had! Also like their Roast Beef and gravy.
The interior is horrible and filthy. I think I saw a booth being used for storage. The more I looked around the more it distracted from enjoying the meal, which also wasn't good. Lettuce in salad limp and going pink on edges. Onion in banana pudding. The waitress was nice.
The staff was nice, the food was ok, & we will not return. I took my parents here, after my mother read about the history in the paper. She said, this place was here for years… many years ago various famous people ate at this restaurant. She said Elizabeth Taylor was known to eat a whole chicken to herself (from what my mother read in the newspaper.) My mom really wanted to check it out. We went for a later lunch. You could tell from the inside & outside it is very old & not well kept up (not clean looking.) My dad went into the restroom, & he told us later the sink was not working. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this place to anyone. I gave it 2 out 5, because the staff was friendly.
Been eating there for a long as I can remember and it's still just as good!!
As a Native Charlotte resident, the food is still great but the restaurant needs a major makeover to it's dining in decor, not dining in friendly, take it to go, thank me later ✌?❤️?
Wonderful atmosphere and good food. The staff is excellent and my mom has been going there for years.
Man, I came in about 20min before closing after an appointment and they were AMAZING.I'm Nonverbal and they were SO patient with me. They didn't have the meal I wanted to get my mother in law so they told me the closest thing to it. The food was hot and fresh, portions were amazing. In the rush of me trying to get out of there so they could close I forgot one of the sides. The staff ran out and brought it TO me!!I was bringing food to my kids' grandma for dinner and she loved it!! She told me a story about how the boys (owners sons) use to play together in her yard with her kids. This is something we don't get too often anymore. She has dementia so she forgets a lot of things. So it was nice to hear the story of the kids playing together and her eating there and enjoying.
Delicious! Our friends and I tried this out on a Monday night and all the food was great. The fried squash is excellent and the fried chicken sandwich was really good. Everyone was really friendly and we will definitely be back. Enjoy!
We have wanted to go here forever, we finally did the food was good and reasonably priced. The staff was super friendly. The building is in poor shape, but if you can get past that then I would say go for it.

I want to thank the workers at Gus's. The service and atmosphere was great. I hadn't been to the restaurant in about 20 years. The food was as wonderful as it was back then. Thank you for staying your course and serving down home food.
We tried Gus's with some friends for the first time tonight and couldn't have been happier with our decision. The nostalgia mixed with well executed classics and fresh veggies will no doubt have us visiting again soon!
Charming hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Super friendly service and delicious food. The fried squash was particularly excellent.
How the hell have I lived in charlotte for almost 12 years and only tried this place for the first time last week?!The food here is absolutely delicious. It was so good last Tuesday, that we got to-go from here again today. Tuesday is my day because they have the mac n cheese on the menu. It's hard to find a good southern mac n cheese, but this place delivers. The first time I had the fried chicken, mac n cheese, & masked taters w/gravy. It also came with 2 biscuits, which were very good. And I had banana pudding for dessert. Tonight I had the grilled chicken which is served over rice with a yellow gravy, mac n cheese, and fried squash. Again, DELISH!Definitely try this place if you're anywhere near it.Also, the staff is soooooo nice and friendly.
OK - the building needs some maintenance badly (so bad, that my kids won't go eat there with me any more) - but the FOOD... the FOOD - this is THE BAR for home cooking food. Favorites are Beet Tips over rice, chicken & dumplings, roast beef, mashed potatoes, fried squash. Food is so good that even the building can only drop this place 1 star.
