I visited the bar with my family after walking in through the separate entrance of the adjacent sister bar and taking advantage of open seating on a larger couch only to be met with blatant discrimination based on my race, despite being a homeowner in the neighborhood. After sitting down and enjoying conversation with my family, the hostess insisted that we move to a smaller table to accommodate a larger party despite there being no consistent large party traffic and no upcoming reservations. I offered a compromise that we would happily move if a large party arrived as we were already seated and enjoying a drink and conversation. The hostess agreed.
After which, the bar staff passive aggressively ignored us and disregarded us by not offering to serve us additional drinks or water in the 45 minutes that we sat there, during which no large party arrived. It was not until I went up to the bar to order another drink that the bartender and hostess raised their frustration that we didn’t move in an aggressive tone in order to preserve a hypothetical option of a “large party” that may or may not come into the bar under the guise of “rules” and “respect for the staff.” It became increasingly apparent that the reason for this treatment was our race, as other patrons of different racial backgrounds were promptly served and attended to as we did not disrespect the staff, knowingly violate any rules, or have any malicious intent.
Further, staff that choose abstract hypothetical seating charts over customer service with gracious patrons aren’t demonstrating job competency mastery or even ethical values. Such actions not only tarnish the reputation of your establishment but also perpetuate systemic racism within our community. Discrimination in any form has no place in society, let alone in a business that is meant to provide a welcoming environment for all.
