I wish I could give Zero stars. I heard amazing things about the food and after a long day of basketball we walked over. This was the worst experience when it comes to service that I have ever had everrr. We told them we had 14, we were going to sit outside and decided it’s too hot we will just split up because there were 4 families. They made it such an issue they had attitudes. They won’t split checks anyways. When we were sat we sat with our youngest in our lap. I could hear the hostess complaining bout us and a waitress with a Mohawk was visibly irritated with use even tho she wasn’t our server. She was walking by us talking shit her and the hostess. We were finally ordering and she came and slammed a pitcher beside my head and my husband said something to her. She begin arguing with my husband why our server was apologizing to us. The continued to talk shit behind us and I just told my husband I didn’t want to spend my money there and wasn’t really comfortable with them making our food at that point. It’s unfortunate we were excited to eat and always want to support black owed businesses but like my husband said we gotta do better because we have the most issues with rudeness and attitude with black owned businesses.

This place is amazing! If you really want to taste the food of Charlotte then you want to go here! This is a real Southern soul food restaurant! Make sure you try the fried green tomatoes and their soul rolls. The atmosphere is welcoming and kind.

If you're visiting Charlotte and don't stop by Mert's, you will be missing a truly unforgettable experience. The food is simply PHENOMENAL! The soul rolls and salmon cakes are OUTSTANDING! The fried chicken, whiting, and shrimp are all crispy and flavorful in all the right places. The collards, cabbage, and mac and cheese are exquisite and the cornbread is so moist and perfectly sweet it's to die for!!! Not to mention the atmosphere is full of soul, from the artwork to the music playing in the background. This was a transformative experience!

Maurice Is the Reason This Place Deserves ZERO STARS …….Let me be very clear….this review has nothing to do with the food….. we never got to try it inside. This is about Maurice, the so-called “manager” at Mert’s Heart and Soul, who gave us one of the most disrespectful, frustrating customer service experiences I’ve ever witnessed.
My family of five came in for our first-ever visit, genuinely excited after hearing great things about this place. We walked in with smiles, ready to support a local business and spend money. Instead, we got a slap in the face from the front door, courtesy of Maurice…I asked what the wait time was. Maurice barely looked up and said, “An hour and a half.” I politely asked, “Can we order to go then?” and he took off his glasses, stared me down like I insulted his mother, and said “It doesn’t matter…. it’s still an hour and a half because we prioritize in-house guests.” Huh?? For a to-go order?? We then asked if we could at least put our name down. Maurice snapped back, “We don’t have a list, it’s first come, first serve.” I followed up by asking, So how do you know who’s next? and he straight up ignored us and called up the people behind us. Didn’t even acknowledge the question….At this point, the disrespect was loud and clear. We stepped outside to cool off, and guess what? A patron came out and told us they were taking names and did have a list. So Maurice either lied to us or just didn’t want to deal with us. Disgusting…. We ended up ordering on Uber Eats, and magically, our food was ready in about 10 to15 minutes. So the hour and a half wait excuse? Total nonsense. The same kitchen that supposedly couldn’t handle a takeout order somehow had it boxed and ready in minutes… all because we bypassed Maurice…..Maurice, if you’re reading this: you owe my family an apology. You were rude, dismissive, and flat-out dishonest. And if this is how you treat customers, you have no business managing a hot dog stand, let alone a respected soul food restaurant. To the owners, If you care about your business at all, remove this man from the front of house. He is driving away customers faster than your kitchen can plate a meal.

This was our first time at Mert’s…. and thanks to Maurice, it’ll be our last

The atmosphere is cool and the service was pleasant but the food was bland. I was hoping for it to be amazing given the buzz. However, I was disappointed.

Visiting from out of town and saw a legit soul restaurant in the downtown area, I knew I had to try it. The greens were balanced and tasty as were all the sides. I recommend the place and supporting the community.

The service, food and atmosphere was outstanding! First off, the waiter was SOOO polite and friendly! He made our time worth while with my grandmother visiting. He gave us all cornbread and my sister a strawberry cake slice even though we didn’t order it because he was so nice! He made a nice menu presentation of the daily specials and favorites! Second, the food ? The food was outstanding and flavorful and hits home base in every way! This food is the very definition of comfort food and soul food! Third, the atmosphere is great! Everyone looks like they love working there. The decorations and even the whole vibe hits every checkmark! This restaurant has even gave me inspiration for my National Art Honors Society fall piece, for the theme of “Soul”. The restaurant hits every satisfaction it could have possibly hit! It’s definitely a great time when we visit!
