When we saw menu online we were not too impressed but since a Crawford restaurant we decided to go. Glad we did! Everything we had was excellent including the Main Street Old Fashion cocktail.
It was Fried Chicken night and I seriously have not had Fried Chicken any better and I grew up in the Deep South. The Fish Dip appetizer was excellent. We ate outside on side deck with partial view of Main Street Clayton. Out waiter was excellent. Answered all our Qs and even looked up a few inquiries we had for future reference. We shall return!

Wonderful place to eat. Best fried chicken in the city, hands down. Ask for a lil honey with it and you'll be in heaven. Service is friendly and prompt. Give it a try!

The food was beautiful and delicious. The au jus on the ribeye threw me off a bit, but the steak was cooked to perfection.

My negative review echoes several others. But I'm going to get into more detail to help other prospective patrons of this place. I don't want anyone else to experience what my wife and I dealt with.
We walked in to Crawford Cookhouse on Friday (9/13/24) at approximately 6 p.m. We wanted to sit inside. The hostess said, "You can sit inside but we need to have the table back by 7:15." I was shocked. Never in my life was I told something even remotely like that.
Except for a few spots at the bar and a couple of tables, the place was empty. I wish I took a picture.
In disbelief with what I just heard said to me, I replied, "So, if it's 7:15 and we had just gotten our food, you're going to kick us out." You'd figure 75 minutes is enough time for a meal but who knows. There could be a delay in the kitchen or one of us could get the wrong dish. Things happen.
Anyway, her response to me: "What I'm saying is we need the table back at 7:15, yes." This is for a 7:30 reservation. They need 15 minutes of turnaround time.
My wife asked what I wanted to do. I said, "no thank you" and we walked out. The hostess said on our way out, "Have a nice night (insert condescending tone)."
Still stunned, I stood outside for a few minutes. I was trying to comprehend what just happened - what was said and how I didn't deserve the manner in how it was said.
I went back in.
I told the hostess that in all my years of eating out that I never experienced anything like this before. She just smiled and said, "That's our policy and I'm enforcing it."
I then said I didn't appreciate her attitude and acting like she didn't want us to eat there. She denied that and said we were welcome to eat there. She added that she would make sure we got our meals in time to be out by 7:15. Delivered with the fakest grin I'd ever seen.
After this second round of condescending rudeness, I exited for good.
My issues/questions:
1. If the hostess would have made sure we would have gotten our food in time so we'd be out by 7:15, why didn't she say that initially? All she said at first was she needed the table back.
2. It's an idiotic policy. People cancel reservations and show up late all the time. Why would you favor them over guaranteed customers? Why do you think most restaurants now just take reservations for large parties?
3. The hostess shouldn't have acted how she did. It's not only about what you say, but how you say it. The world would be a much better place without people like her screwing it up.

We visited for my mother-in-law‘s birthday. The food was hit and miss. We ordered the roasted bone marrow on the recommendation of our server, and even though we are pretty adventurous eaters, the appearance and the texture of the dish was a miss. We also ordered the tomato tartar which wasn’t anything special. There were four of us, and we didn’t eat it all. The dishes were pretty good. We ordered the catfish Poboy, the BLT, the trout, which my mother-in-law said was the best she ever had, and I ordered the grilled pork with the pimento grits. The pork was a little overcooked, so the edges were dry. The grits were good, but the whole dish was kind of heavy, not much brightness to it. For dessert, we ordered the bread pudding, and the s’mores brownie sundae. The bread pudding dessert with the salted caramel ice cream was one of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time. I would go back just for that! The service was really good and pretty quick. I also ordered a nonalcoholic cocktail that had ginger and mint and was really tasty. We paid around $200 for the meal, and because the appetizers were not that great, I’m not sure that I would go back. I really like to have good appetizers before my meal.

We love Crawford Cookshop. Great food, incredible staff, nice ambience. We go often for the fish and chips and usually top it off with the bread pudding. One of our favorite restaurants!
