So sad, this was my favorite place to get a tasty meal and a fresh margarita, but something changed. Food has become white-washed, lacking seasoning and flavor. The salsa, the tacos with pickled onions used to have crunch and fresheness, now the onions are limp and the salsa tastes canned.

Now let's talk about service. Ordered a beer to start, and my drink was empty when my meal arrived, no acknowledgement that our beers were done. Then no one returned until the meal was over then asked if we wanted a box and another round. Nope, check please.

My boyfriend and I are visiting. We wanted to have a nice date night with good food. The person that sat us down was very rude. She told us we only had an option to sit at the bar or outside when there was plenty of space outside of these options. If you’re looking for authenticity, this is not the place. The salsa had plastic pieces in it. The chicken enchiladas tasted sweet. My boyfriend ate steak (shredded only option)which were good. It’s just not what I was expecting after looking at the online photos.

Do NOT come here if you’re visiting OBX. Locals only, as other reviews have stated. Came here as a party of 8, received possibly the most horrible service I’ve ever experienced in OBX.
Luckily we had an 8:15 reservation and were seated at 8:17. Good sign. We came and sat down and were immediately served chips and water, when we ran out of water in our carafes, the waiter took the empty ones and said he’d bring us more—but we waited like 20 minutes for more water after having to ask for it again since he forgot. The waiter was very nice but we had seen him taking a shot that a table ordered for him just before we sat down.
We ordered two drinks to the table, one of which contained a strand of steel wool (metal) which a member of our party sipped through the straw of the drink and spit out. We brought this to the attention of the host and he said “Oh thank you”, took the piece of metal, and immediately walked off with it. We had to call him back over and tell him this was an issue and we wanted a replacement drink, we didn’t want to just keep drinking the contaminated drink. No apology, didn’t take the drink off the bill. We also waited like 20 minutes to get a replacement drink. The owner was present in the restaurant at that time and knew about the metal in the drink (we saw her talking to the guy who we told) yet didn’t even come over and apologize. She was just sitting there chit chatting with the staff and the locals sitting at the bar. In fact most of the staff was talking to the locals instead of doing their job.
After all this, they finally took our order, literally 35 minutes after we got there. We got our food about 15-20 minutes after placing our orders, so almost an hour had passed since we’d arrived. At this point the restaurant was empty because it closes at 9. The food actually tasted very good but some of it came out cold. Didn’t send the cold entree back just asked for some hot sauce to heat it up. The rice was ice cold but we didn’t mention it because didn’t feel like starting more of an issue after we sent the drink back. The food that came out hot was delicious.
We heard remarks regarding our table from the bartender saying “Everything’s going south over there” to the owner. Yeah maybe they wouldn’t be going south if the food were hot, served in less than an hour, and we weren’t sipping pieces of metal in our drinks. After all of this terrible service we still had to give a 20% tip since we were 5+ people. A true shame. The owner seems to be a terrible person/business owner based on the fact that she had nothing to say to us after one of us nearly swallowed a piece of metal in the drink. Locals get a discount and desserts on the house, yet military members don’t get a discount.
This place seems to only care about giving locals good service, don’t come here if you’re just visiting OBX. You are NOT welcome for my service. ??

Food was very good. Not the absolute best, but very good. Portions were big and the drinks were great. Our server Ramiro was absolutely awesome. Took care of us like a 5 star restaurant would. Drinks never empty, food recommendations and speedy service!!! I recommend the restaurant but I HIGHLY recommend Ramiro!!!

Just go. Went on the recommendation of a good friend back home who is pretty particular and loves Mexican food. We went with a group of 13 and across-the-board it was a thumbs up. All the entrées were devoured along with some very tasty guacamole and chips and salsa. Special tea drinks were very good and our service with Ramiro was excellent.

We have been long-time fans of Agave Roja since they opened, and it's always on our list of favorite restaurants to visit every summer we are in Corolla. Unfortunately, our visit last week for dinner was pretty disappointing as the food quality was nothing like we always knew and remembered it to be. My shrimp quesadilla was flavorless and stuffed with tons of cheese and few unseasoned shrimp, and it was presented on a plate with only lettuce and chopped tomatoes - I had to request sour cream, which was an additional charge. The guac, while fresh, needed a ton of salt - chips were salty and stale, and my husband's Chamoro dish (his absolute favorite!) was presented as a soupy mess with the pork already off the bone, minced up with a ton of beans. Knowing something was off given this experience overall, I did a little research and saw that the original owner sadly passed unexpectedly, which explains the changes we experienced as we recall the great pride that he took in serving his dishes each time we dined in in the past. We hope that this feedback is helpful to the restaurant as we would love to see it's continued success, but I doubt we will return until the food resumes at the level that we used to love (and crave often!). All of this said our server was fantastic, and Agave Roja still blows it's Mexican cuisine neighbor across the street in Timbuck II out of the water!

The portions are quite large, which I dearly wish I could say was a good thing. However, this place seems to think that a burrito is a type of dessert. I had two bites, and the second was out of sheer disbelief and a sort of morbid fascination. A watery puddle of some kind of sugary ketchup based sauce masquerading as salsa, a tortilla containing nothing but ground beef, that I can only assume someone slipped and spilled an entire tub of discount corn syrup
into, because surely this tragic excuse for Mexican food cannot be intentional. It was the sort of meal that is so bad you can't even be angry, just amazed at the depths of culinary depravity. A truly unique experience.

Service was okay but the food was so gross. That was the worst burrito I’ve ever had. Not sure how you can mess up something easy like that. Both the salsa and the filling of the burrito were so sweet. Like they just dumped a bunch of sugar into it. So expensive too for such bad food.
