We are frequent guests, our go to spot for an upscale dinner and cocktails every time we visit our home in OBX.
We arrived after receiving two confirmations of our reservation to find the restaurant was closed. Second time it's happened. Bad business model.
I contacted Metropolis early in September to see if they would be open the first week in October, when we were planning to visit OBX. They weren't sure (lots of places close down after the season is over). So we were glad when we were able to make reservations. What a wonderful find! This is a tapas restaurant that serves an incredible variety of small plates - lovely tasting dishes that encourage you to order something else as soon as you finish them. We started with their shrimp dip with ubiquitous grilled bread - very nice. We then went to duck confit and a short rib rag over penne - delicious. When we ordered we figured those two courses would be our mains and we'd be through. But wait, there's more! We next tried the Tom Kha Gai - an amazing assortment of seafood in a coconut cream sauce. We finished our meal with a decadent seared foie gras. This is a place to put on your list for "must try" when visiting OBX.
Our first time here. Shrimp dip was delicious, Tartar of black pepper tuna was also good. Duck confit was a joke $20 for a small bowl of shredded duck with beans, it looked like an appetizer. Jumbo shrimp & yellow fin was ok as was the Angel hair. We spent $135 and walked away hungry. Very disappointed.

We've been coming to the Outer Banks Annually for the last 30 years but we only started with Metropolis the last few years, but it is a new tradition, with sometimes multiple visits in a week!
The owners are usually on site and working and are friendly and happy to talk about the history of the restaurant or the food and give recommendations when asked.
I'm not sure we have ever had anything we didn't like here. This year we had the bread which was fresh out of the oven and just delicious, the Panzanella salad which is as good as it has been every year we've been here. The Trumpet Mushroom and Polenta Chimichurri was our favorite this year and the Short Rib Ragu 'Lil Italy' was also terrific. We tried both available desserts (panna cotta and bread pudding, bread pudding was the fav) and were not disappointed.
If you like cocktails however, this is a place to be. They have a wonderful martini menu with flavors both for traditional drinkers as well as those that like things on the sweeter side. Liquid Sunshine was my favorite of the night.
This is not the standard shore bar food restaurant that has all the same menu items, and I love it all the more for it.

Everything was delightful from start to finish. The vibe was relaxed and fun, the pacing of the meal was perfect, the customer service was top notch, and the food was beyond amazing. If I could give this restaurant 100 stars, I would!

Love this Restaurant. I aways have something different each time I go. The food is well prepared, the cocktails are amazing and the service is welcoming. I truly recommend this restaurant for a lovely night out!
We go to Metropolis every year when we visit the Outer Banks. The foods is always great and the cocktails too.
I know that tapas are small bites, but the foie gras was a single bite-sized sliver and the lump crab meat and tomato special was a martini glass filled with tomatoes dusted with a few strands of crab meat. Stick with the soup, bread and martinis and plan on dinner elsewhere.

Despite our reservation, they seated us next to their toilets. New waiter unable/unaware in how to help our group of seven people order and share tapas dishes. Dinner was a total fail.

Don’t waste your time or money at this restaurant. We had a horrible experience from start to finish. So many other options available. Never again.

Metropolis is a beautiful dine in. My husband and I shared the soup, focaccia bread, shrimp dip, salad, and Ahi Tuna for the light appetizers. The soup and bread were amazing. Shrimp dip was also amazing, but a bit salty. Salad was on point, and the Ahi Tuna could’ve been a little rarer. Short rib ragu was delicious, seared scallops were also awesome but a bit over done. We also got a mixed grilled dish with shrimp and ahi tuna, I was not really a fan. Shrimp was dry so was the ahi tuna. Couscous was delicious.
Service was great. Mark was very welcoming and hospitable, which was appreciated. Overall great experience. Would try it again!
