Had an excellent experience at the Cary location, but Durham was a strikeout. We walked in on an 87° day and discovered there was no air conditioning, no fans, and they didn’t even prop the door open for air flow. We were told it would be a 20-minute wait, so we put our names on the waitlist. 45 minutes later, still nothing. There were dirty tables everywhere that needed to be bussed so people could be seated, but no one in that place had an ounce of motivation to get it done. We left.

Good place to eat comfort food.
Chelsea is an amazing server. Clear to the point, super sweet and has great charisma.
Food: Chicken was delicious. Great flavor and cook. The breading on the chicken was perfect crunch. Nice and succulent.
Waffle is okay, not my favorite as I prefer a lighter batter. They a variety of smears and drizzles for your waffle and chicken to help enhance the flavor. Customize to your hearts desire. Mac n cheese had a nice herbal seasoning in it. Greens were solid.
Beer options limited but I did enjoy my Italian Pilsner. Try their lemonade and tea.
Paid street parking is available and there is a lot as well where you can validate your ticket.
Interior pays homage to jazz with the greats.

Make sure you either get a reservation or come right when they open. But this place has such good food. Love the chicken and waffles with schmear. The shrimp dish was also one of the best things I've eaten. Service is slow, so block off plenty of time.
Give this place a try!

I just left your establishment with my family following a very disappointing interaction with one of your servers. We visited your location at 530 Foster St #130, Durham, NC 27701, as a party of nine. Upon arrival, we were greeted by your hostess after she finished seating a few other parties. She was very pleasant and informed us that, due to another large party being seated, our group would need to be split between tables and that a 20% gratuity would be added — which we had no issue with.
However, as she attempted to seat us, a waitress stopped her and stated that we could not be seated because two large parties had just been sat and she needed to manage those tables first. I reassured them that we were in no rush and didn’t mind being seated separately. Still, the waitress insisted we wait and discouraged the hostess from accommodating us.
I then asked if we could be seated in the nearly empty main dining room — away from the large parties — but that was also denied, with the reasoning that it would “overwhelm the kitchen.” This was confusing, as smaller parties continued to be seated without issue. I even suggested splitting our group further across multiple tables, but was still told it would be a problem for the kitchen.
At that point, it became clear that either your kitchen is not equipped to handle your restaurant’s full capacity, or that certain groups are being selectively turned away — either of which is disappointing.
We were excited to support what we believed to be a Black-owned restaurant during our visit to Durham, but instead left feeling unwelcome due to how the situation was handled. I strongly recommend retraining staff on how to manage guest flow during busy periods, or reevaluating your operating capacity if the current setup cannot consistently accommodate guests.

Unacceptable Experience at Dame’s Chicken & Waffles – Raleigh, NC (530 Foster St)
We visited Dame’s Chicken & Waffles at 530 Foster Street, Raleigh, at 10:00 AM with a friend and his 3-year-old son. From the moment we walked in, the service was indifferent at best and downright dismissive at worst. We were denied a table in the center of the restaurant without any explanation, even though there were clearly open seats.
When we finally sat down, I politely asked to substitute the waffle (which I medically cannot eat) with 3 eggs instead of 2. The server sharply replied, “We don’t do substitutions,” with zero flexibility or care. We let it go and placed our orders—or so we thought.
Over 40 minutes later, we still hadn’t received any food. I went up to the server to ask what was going on, and she was completely clueless. Eventually, we realized she never even entered our order. Meanwhile, another table seated 10 minutes after us had already received their full meals. No apology, no acknowledgment, no attempt to fix it.
We left and went to the food hall next door, where the experience was infinitely better—faster, friendlier, and far more professional.
This was not just bad service. It was a complete failure of basic competence—made even worse because we had a small child with us. It reflects a lack of training, poor management, and a complete disregard for guests.
I will never return to this location, and I strongly urge others to take their business elsewhere. A restaurant is more than just its menu—it’s the people and the experience. And here, both were a total disaster.

These people refried chicken that someone else didn't want and reheated a waffle that was rubbery. Food came out fast as 3 mins after ordering it. Im sitting here sick now. I just left yesterday. Instead of the waitress letting manager know I wasn't satisfied she didn't say nothing about it to them but kept asking if I want a takeout box. That's nasty. Won't go there anymore

The chicken is always soo fresh here. The shmears are all really good for the waffles. Huge fan of the mac and cheese too. Can’t go wrong at this place. And our servers have always been friendly/great.

Very poor customer service when I called with questions.
Was excited to try this spot! Service was amazing, food totally subpar. Chicken arrived cool, not at all warm, waffles were undercooked and sausage and eggs overcooked. Definitely first and last visit for us! Totally disappointing experience.
Great post axe throwing lunch to refuel. We even met the owner Dame and he was very polite. Was telling us about the live music and how he's about to relocate to another spot. How he has other locations in Cary and Greensboro. The love double bass was nice. I can see myself relaxing on a nice evening there or the new location. The food was delicious and nice portions, I took half home for later. I had the 1 cutlet, classic waffle, cashew caramel, and butter. Yum!!
