Down home Southern cookin’ at Lula & Sadie’s in Lakewood neighborhood, Durham…fried chicken and red velvet waffles, and corned beef hash with eggs over hard and pickled okra…Excellent service+ atmosphere and Sunday brunch live music. Definitely coming back,
The food was amazing. I had the fried gree tomato appetizer and it had pimento cheese and bacon absolutely delicious. My husband had the fried dirty rice appetizer and he lived it. He had the shrimp and grits that
were so yummy; he let me try it. I had the potato crusted catfish and it came with buttered okra and black eye pea salad. The okra and black eye pea salad were so good and the catfish was crispy, tender and flaky. I will definitely be going back! I forgot to take pictures.
The restaurant is spacious, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing but the food was sub-par for brunch.
We visited today to celebrate my son's college graduation and were extremely pleased with the service. Our waitress was very attentive, food was delicious. We hope to make it a regular on our outings.
I visited with my wife this past weekend, after seeing a social media posting. A reservation was made online that was honored upon arrival.
The ambiance was great, as I could tell it was an old historic business converted to a restaurant. Artwork and decorations cool.
My wife ordered the chicken and red velvet waffle, and I the bacon wrapped meatloaf. I opted to add collard greens and my wife the rosemary fries.
My wife enjoyed the chicken, however disliked the waffles as it left something to be desired. I enjoyed my meatloaf, however, it was overly slathered with the glaze sauce. I would’ve preferred less as not mask the flavor of the meat. The collard greens were “green” in flavor, yet tolerable and the cornbread was a nice touch at the end.
Unfortunately, I was not completely prepared for the price of the bill, though I jokingly told my wife it would be approximately $80 ($20+ of which was side items and the 20% gratuity). As many have echoed before, an adjustment can be made to food prices, as I likely would’ve tipped more than what was already added.
I enjoyed my experience, but I’d be remiss to say I’d recommend the restaurant to others in the future, solely on pricing.
Had the catfish sandwich with rosemary fries. Both were very good. Definitely worth a visit.
Very noisy restaurant coupled with live music made conversation impossible.
I sat for an hour before the server informed me that it would be another 30-40 minutes before my food would be ready. She explained the kitchen was having issues and the manger and owner were helping out. I asked to speak to the manager and was told to email the manager about my experience.
They should have informed guests when they arrived that they were having issues. I wasted 90 minutes of my day and I still had to find another place to eat.
They have a lot of improvements to make. There were three other tables that left without service as well.
Delicious! Didn’t even get to take a pic. I ordered the smoked duck gumbo, it was perfectly seasoned, cornbread was sweet. Portion sizes are a little small (just means none to take home 😋). My friend ordered the red beans and rice and she said they needed tobasco. Definitely would recommend and I would return to try the other dishes next time I’m in NC.
Phenomenal dining experience, delicious food, fantastic service-intelligent menu options! Looking forward to returning for dinner!!

What a nice surprise. We found this place on a list of Top 10 restaurants in Durham. It was lovely. Great food. Nice, friendly staff. Good bar and a very comfortable atmosphere. Our table included chicken and waffles, catfish, meatloaf and chicken and dumplings. Everyone loved their meals. We'll be back.
Think I was over charged for my meals heard the waiters complain about a tip even though a 20% tip is automatically added the food was under seasoned was super disappointed. Would really not recommend this place to anyone.
The food was great. I had the fried green tomatoes (without bacon) and Nic’s Loaded Grits. The loaded grits were my fav. The staff were very professional and friendly, the vibe was great and I loved the jazz music. Will definitely come back.
Great experience. Great food even better people! Drinks were great. Atmosphere was great. Definitely going to return.
Had the duck gumbo. Gumbo was good. Portion size was small. Side of greens were tough and bitter. Meal was good, just not noteworthy.
