Portions were generous for tapas but the food was also incredibly thoughtful. Would definitely come back!
Delicious meal and cozy environment. Our server was very friendly, attentive and extremely helpful in navigating selections around a food allergy.
Would suggest this one white lady at counter learning better communication skills instead of telling people what they can't do before figuring out what they're actually doing. I mean, aren't microaggressions kinda unhinged, too?
Food and service was excellent. It was very busy, but the bar and kitchen kept everything at a reasonable pace. One of my favorite places in Durham.
Our server was great. She gave good recommendations for wines to match the desired taste profile. She also helped us navigate through the menu. 4 small plates was just enough for my husband and me. Prices were a little high for the quantity of food. Overall, an enjoyable experience.
The food was amazing. Service was great. Tables were a bit too close together and it was difficult to talk.
We really enjoy the different dishes offered at Mateo's. The wine recommendation was also enjoyable. The problem was there was no heat! We even sat in the front window curtained area which I also enjoy. We had a reservation made several weeks in advance. The restaurant should have called to let us know the heating situation. They texted to give us a 30 minute table warning, but no communication on the lack of heat. We wore our coats and hats through dinner. This is a pour management issue, not a reflection on the food or server, which met our usual high expectations. Things go awry, I get it, but customers should be forewarned and given a choice in that situation.
Amazing experience, all around!! Food was outstanding and service excellent. Highly recommend!
Another great experience at Mateo! Food and service were great. Noise level was moderate because we were in the upstairs room.
2nd visit to Mateo's and it was as great as the 1st visit. Love the variety of tapas offerings and specialty cocktails. Service was impeccable, great food, perfect cocktails, love the vibe. Definitely recommend Mateo's for a great dining experience!

Nice space. Good hum, but not too loud. Very good service. The short rib empanadas special and the boquerones were both stand outs. The ham croquettes were good, but needed way more ham in them (but the mustard 'sauce' underpinning it all (along with the grated cheese) help make up for that short fall.
The brussel sprouts dish was a disappointment.
I would stil go back to explore more of the menu.

There was a wide variety of tapas. I especially enjoyed the Brussels, sweet potatoes, and dates. It took a lot of plates to begin to get full. The environment was quite loud. I wanted to be asked if it was a social occasion.
one of my favourite restaurants in durham
the paella, bone marrow, pate, and queso frito are excellent.
on weekdays, walk ins would usually work if you go early, though it’s best to make a reservation on weekends/ fridays
service is fine
also they usually don’t accept apple pay

The food was amazing , atmosphere was very loud even upstairs . This would have been my new favorite place and would come back with friend and family except when check arrived they charge 3% fee for using credit card . The restaurant is packed , always ! they are not hurting for money , but they are passing on processing fee to customers instead paying it . This is greed ! They don’t tell people upfront either it’s shows up on receipts in small prints . Very disappointing .
