Delicious food, casual area. Despite near to closing-time, the staff here welcomed and served us (without rushing).

The food is decent but charging that much for some flounder out of a shack is a bit weird.

Thank you to all the staff at the Salt Box in Durham. Ms. Carmen rolled out the red carpet for my dining experience. Fresh food, great experience. Please visit you will not be disappointed.

Let me start by saying the person serving at the Saltbox on Magnum Street in Durham needed some help. She did it ALL by herself - took orders, handled the payment and served up your order. Needless to say there was a line and a 20 minute wait. Now to the food - it’s called the “saltbox” for a reason! Salty, Small portions, expensive price and greasy potatoes. Drove 40 minutes and I can truly say - not worth it.

What a shame. I loved the style of this place; counter-serve, focused menu, picnic tables, etc. We came on a recommendation to get the shrimp, but when we got there they were out. I respect that they are using fresh food, but for a place with only a handful of options to be out of their top seller by mid-day was disappointing. With that said, I love scallops so I went with the hush honeys and scallop sandwich. My friend got the oyster sandwich, and both of us asked for no slaw.We were warned about the 30 minute wait, so no issues there. When the food came is where the disappointment started. Despite asking for no slaw, we both got slaw, and the whole plate looked like a total mess. It looks like they literally grabbed a handful of everything and chucked it into the styrofoam container. The scallops tasted fresh but were otherwise bland and strangely chewy. Oysters were also lackluster. Finally we asked to use the restroom and were told "It's back there but it's locked and I'm too busy to get you the key". I strive to support local businesses but I also expect to be treated with a modicum of respect as a patron, especially when this place is NOT cheap. The hush honeys were actually pretty good, so if I came here against my will at some point in the future, I'd probably just get those.

OMG, just came back from New Orleans, Tampa/St. Pete/Treasure Island, Outer Banks NC & had great seafood (oysters, shrimp, scallops, fish, chowders of any kinds are my favorites) and they were great, but this Durham Joint by far bested them all. 5 stars

Top notch, worth the wait, nice people, amazing food. So good I got the cookbook. Biggest regret is not trying this place sooner.

This place is so good. The hushpuppies with garam masala and honey are some of the best pups I’ve ever had. Would recommend any of the seafood—all tastes fresh and the seasoning is right (very salty true to name).

I am sitting in my car in front of Salt Box with a happy belly. I didn’t want to wait to leave a review as I wanted the experience fresh in my mind. The seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly. The side dishes potatoes and slaw were delicious. All the sauces, tartar, mustard base and cocktail...outstanding. However that’s not what made me write a review this minute. Linda, the woman working today did. What OUTSTANDING customer service. From the greeting, to the take control of the convo to guide me, the suggestions, the promise and delivering if knocking my socks off, thanking me for coming so far, asking to come back again, suggesting I try all the sauces because everything is made from scratch and even tho I wasn’t a cocktail or mustard person I should at least try as she thought I’d be pleasantly surprised. And she was right! I never ate cocktail or mustard and I killed those sauces. She even walked my food to me in the car where I was keeping warm AND FOLLOWED UP TO SEE HIW MY FOOD WAS WHIKE I WAS EATING IN NY CAR. I work in hospitality and the steps of service and the level of service was killer. A lot can be learned from Linda. If you don’t tip you should. If I had a restaurant I was managing currently I would steal her in a heartbeat. She is kind, welcoming, knowledgeable and fun. The seafood was Bonn, but I honestly think the experience made it taste 1000x better. What a great and happy lunch I had. Worth the 40 min drive from wake forest. To the Salt box owners, give Linda a raise. Seriously, you have a gem representing your brand. I will be sharing this across al platforms so everyone knows, go eat some delish seafood and go see Linda :)

The seafood is cooked perfectly and everything I’ve had was delicious! Highly recommend grouper bites and the flounder for fried fish. The hush honeys are the bomb and I love the freshness of the unique slaw. And the iced tea is the best. And it’s been easy to get takeout online during covid.
