You have to wait a while for the food but man oh man is it worth the wait. Best fishI have had in the Triangle. I usually go with the Spicy Mahi plate and the potato side is delicious too. You must go here..it is an institution of Durham and it actually lives up to the hype.

This place is a must stop. Get there early on a Saturday to beat the crowd. The food was fresh and scrumptious. Service was superb. I wasn't a fan of the elongated hush puppies but the taste was delicious. The slaw?! My goodness, absolutely amazing. I plan to drive 8 hours round trip to visit again very soon.Vegetarian options: Limited but sides availableParking: Decent parking until busy hours

This James BEARD winner lives up to the expectations. The fish was well seasoned. Unique take with thin sliced potato with onions and green peppers. Tasty sweet and sour Cole slaw. Be aware that Seafood items can sell out.

We stopped by to pick up dinner since we had heard good reviews and were in the area after watching a high school lacrosse game. My husband went in and got 3 shrimp plates. We hurried home excited to eat a wonderful shrimp dinner. I was surprised when I opened the first box to put my granddaughter’s food on a plate. The shrimp not only was covered in dark red spice but did not even look like shrimp. I wondered if it was clam strips. The homemade chips that were included were all limp and some did not even look like they were cooked. The honey hushpuppies were at least edible, but they were overdone and the drizzled honey was missing on some and a sticky mess on others. I love fried shrimp, hush puppies, slaw, and homemade chips, but this was not only a disappointment, it was disgusting. I can’t imagine it would have been any better if we had dined in, so I don’t think getting takeout was the issue! I don’t think I have ever left a negative review—I generally stick to doing reviews when I have an especially positive experience. But this food was so awful, in my opinion, that I felt I needed to share my experience. Please note that my husband said the atmosphere was wonderful, as was the service. But that doesn’t help when you spend $93 to take food for 3 home.

The food was fresh and hot, but it did not have any flavor. The cashier was friendly and helpful, but her English was not that good.I would not go back here or refer this restaurant to anyone.

Over hyped and for the quality and quantity it's overpriced. Not terrible but definitely nothing special especially when you consider what else is available in Durham for that price point. Cashier was constantly on his phone in the middle of what looked like a busy shift I even had to wait an extra 20 seconds or so while he played with his phone in the middle of taking my order. Shrimp were rubbery and not the quality I expected from the things I had heard. Disappointed and probably won't go back.

Vacations Come True

02/24/24 Had the freshest food and best customer service by all the employees. I loved the slaw, which seems vinegar based and pickled versus with too much mayonnaise like most. A quick trip to Durham and as the only place we were able to visit, Saltbox represented well.

my husband had oysters and fried potatoes. He said they were chewey. potatoes were fine. I had black drum, which was overcooked, too much spice on one side only. I had to lay them on several napkins to get grease absorbed. So disappointed for a meal that was 54.00. We call this our one and done.
