Absolutely love Portrait Gallery! Food is simply amazing and perfect portions. The staff is great, Lacey our server was so attentive and friendly. Brandon the owner stopped by to check on us while dining and excited to share how great the experience my wife and I were having. A must for anyone in downtown Matthews area. Insider tip, try the Brussels sprouts (you’ll be glad you did). Thank you!!!

Popped in tonight. I wanted to love this place. We have two hours to kill twice a week while our daughter has a commitment nearby. Walked in about 640 - a two top at the bar, a two top at a (communal) table and a solo diner at another (communal) table. We sat at the bar.
The owner (who was also bartender) and the server couldn’t have been nicer. The by-the-glass wine list is pretty well-rounded with a few unexpected varietals. Ambience good despite the slow night.
The food was where things fell short. They don’t make their own salad dressings (which is a problem for me - can’t eat Xanthan gum and just about 100% of bottled salad dressings has it), so the salads were out.
Husband got a Caesar and a burger, no complaints on either and no egregious errors.
I ordered a strip steak medium rare with a side of the green beans. First steak came out medium well. They were very apologetic. I kept the green beans to snack on while I waited for a remake - though I barely ate half of them. They were the hardest, most sinewy green beans I’ve ever encountered.
After what seemed like a very long wait (considering at this point we were the only diners still there), my second steak comes out - also overcooked, also medium well. Again apologetic and the owner/bartender obviously took it off my tab, along with comping my glass of wine. They offered to make me something else, but at this point we were out of time, and I was tired and hungry.
Didn’t give them a third chance to make it right - there was some commentary on a “new cook”.
Clearly, we won’t be back.

Good date spot in Matthews with good food and cocktails! I especially enjoyed the brussel sprouts, which I never thought I'd say.

The patio was perfect, we went at the end of October and it was not too cold since it’s protected on all sides. It’s very cozy & everything we ordered was delicious.

We rented the space for a welcome/rehearsal dinner the night before our wedding celebration. It was delicious, the staff were very attentive and friendly, and all in all it was a great experience.

We order filet mignon. It was about 1/2 in thick. It tasted like a sirloin. It wasn’t tender nor cooked medium rare. I order a side of broccoli that looked moldy. The Bernaise was cold. The service was good. The wine and the torte were delicious. I would never do back. They took $10. Off. Because we asked about the beef. Never again.

Such a fun unique restaurant in Matthews, North Carolina. It’s located in downtown Matthews on one of the side streets. Previouslyonly offered small plates, but they changed the menu recently. They do have a nice selection of different types of foods. If you’re a vegetarian, there’s always options to not include the protein. We went a couple weeks ago with friends. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and food. Great place to go with friends or a date night.

Love what Brandon has done with the place. My martini was excelently chilled, and my bartender was professional and personable. The shishito peppers and brussels were incredible. Cant wait to go back.

We had the best meal at The Portrait Gallery last weekend. The service was prompt and friendly, the drinks were amazing, and the food was awesome. I definitely recommend to anyone who wants to try local or a more intimate setting for date night, brunch, or a small plate at the bar.

Lovely little restaurant/hangout. Good food and one of the best margaritas I’ve had. They use fresh juice, not a margarita mix.
I'm an event planner and recently chose the Portrait Gallery for my birthday party. We had 20 women. Brandon and his team went above and beyond! The food was excellent, the service top notch, and the atmosphere was perfect for a celebration.
Love this place! Great food! Fabulous service! Wonderful atmosphere!
