This place is a nice surprise. After being frustrated with other places asking me how I want my burger, Dune Burger, just offers well-done hamburgers. That is the way an authentic burger should be!

If you’re looking for a classic Outer Banks dining experience, Dune Burger at Whalebone Junction in Nags Head is a must-visit. My family and I have been enjoying this iconic burger stand for generations, and it’s heartwarming to see that Dune Burger continues to deliver the same outstanding quality and nostalgic charm.

From juicy burgers to North Carolina-style pulled pork, Dune Burger has been a staple in our family vacations, serving up delicious meals that have become a beloved tradition. The menu remains true to its roots, offering the same mouthwatering flavors that have made this local establishment a favorite for years. Whether you're craving a perfectly grilled burger or some tender, flavorful pulled pork, this spot never disappoints. Their malts and milkshakes are also a treat, rounding out the experience with a sweet touch.

Ordering is straightforward—you place your order at one window and pick it up at another, making the process quick and efficient. There’s plenty of outdoor seating, so you can enjoy your meal in the fresh Outer Banks air. With ample parking and a fantastic playground for children, Dune Burger is perfect for families looking to relax and have a good time.

The atmosphere at Dune Burger captures the essence of the Outer Banks, with its casual and welcoming vibe. The friendly staff, who are locals themselves, and the quick service add to the overall positive experience. It’s clear that Dune Burger remains committed to its heritage while continuing to provide exceptional food and service.

If you're visiting Nags Head and looking for a true taste of the OBX, make sure to stop by Dune Burger at Whalebone Junction. It’s a cherished local gem owned and run by locals that continues to delight both long-time patrons and new visitors alike.

Vegetarian options: Although not extensive, there are enough vegetarian items on the menu that a vegetarian could eat here.

Parking: There are a few pull-up parking spots directly in front of the restaurant, by the order and pickup counters, and there is a large public parking lot directly adjacent.

Kid-friendliness: There is a lovely outdoor seating area and playground.

Wheelchair accessibility: The parking lot and ramps are wheelchair accessible.

Despite staying in this area before, we had never stopped at Dune Burger until this year. We were looking for a quick and cheap lunch option for the kids, and we absolutely found it. We loved the food and especially the shakes. They hit the spot on a hot summer day. Burgers and dogs are definitely a step up from normal fast food fare, and prices are very reasonable.

By chance I found a check written out to Dune burger for $700 in the Dune burger parking lot. I took the check right up to the window and some drugged out looking guy with his shirt off standing in the parking lot started yelling at me to give him the check. I did with any reasonable person would do, ignore the druggy and gave the check to the girl in the Dune Burger order window. But then druggie guy started yelling at the girl taking orders and went up to her and snatched the check out of her hands. The girl seem to look like this was an everyday occurrence and at this point I realized crazy guy was probably the owner or manager at Dune Burger. The man said “get out of here we are closed now!” He aggressively moved closer to yell at me as if he was going to fight me! The girl shut the order window in my face and refused to even look at me. ….I found them a $700 check and returned it to them and this is how they treat me. I could’ve tore it up or thrown it in the garbage or not even picked it up. Many people out there would try to cash it! You would think they be happy that somebody honest found their check and returned it to them before somebody dishonest found it! Something really is wrong with this place and they should probably be investigated.

Let me say the food was outstanding (outside of the cheese fries which were cold and flimsy). The ding on this place is the amount of time you have to wait to get the food. With a tiny outdoor area, there is not much waiting room. With 6 people ahead of us it took a little over 30 minutes to get our food (from the time we ordered). Basing it solely on my experience playing Overcooked, it shouldn’t take that long to fire up several burgers and hotdogs. I would eat here again, just not when I’m starving or in a hurry.

This place has been around for years and it’s because they sling the best burgers on the beach! It’s a must eat when in the OBX. This isn’t a fine dining establishment, so if you are one of those who want to be all prim and proper like some of the people in the reviews below, you will prob want to skip it, but know you are missing out since eating this burger on the beach just hits different. If you know, you know!

Best burgers in the US!!! This small, but charming setup is a throwback to a simpler times that just can't be captured these days. Pass up any other burger joint in the surrounding area and be sure to stop through the Dune Burger and ask for Dot Graham.

Fries were 3.75. Soda 2.75. With tax 7.02. Expensive for cold, limp fries and a cup with 70% ice. Not a single crisp fry. Go somewhere else. Anywhere else. Total ripoff.
