MESSAGE TO OWNER: HANK, your blessing within, noticed my wife and I peeking through the windows before hours, and as we were walking away, ran out to invite us in to look around and wait for the kitchen to get going, which would have been just a little while. We explained to him that we had just eaten lunch, but I told him I was very impressed that he would run out to catch us, and I asked if he was the owner, because usually only an owner would go to such extreme. He said he was not, and I told him that you were very lucky to have him, and I promised him that because of that, I will be back in to eat with him very soon. I just thought he should be recognized publicly for going the extra mile for you. Duane Harrison.

Poppy's is in a great old building, the history of which I know nothing. Decor is quasi Americana-Vintage- Veteran owned perhaps? Food and service were spot on. I had fish and chips and wife had the shrimp basket. House made chips are a must-have. Shrimp are breaded with some house-made secret mojo that was delicious and unique to this place. I've been a coastal seafood diner for 25yrs and this is really good. This will have to be a repeater because their main claim to fame are their burgers and they looked amazing.
Great place! Food, atmosphere, & service were wonderful!

I used to come here all the time it’s been a while. I haven’t been here since they first opened poppies
We walked in this afternoon, and there was definitely a funny smell of the place after sitting down and looking at the ceiling I realized it was mold that was covering the ceiling. That’s really what killed our experience.
The place was not busy and it took quite some time to get our food
Service was fine
I don’t think we will be coming back because of the mold smell
And you can clearly tell it’s fuzzy all over the ceiling tiles

I love the patriotic atmosphere. The warm pimento cheese and warm pretzel bites are amazing. We will be back!

Our experience was not great
Cook was under staffed and we waited over an hour for our food. They were apologetic. I think they were just off this day so I didn’t kill the review. Food was great. The large pretzel sampler is highly recommend!!

Went here to grab some drinks and lunch on Sunday while walking around New Bern. The reason for only 4 stars is after we were seated we sat for 10 to 15 minutes and had to ask someone if our table was going to be waited on. Once the waitress got there she was friendly and helpful. The drinks and food we got were good.

The food absolutely sucked! Our table was getting rained on by the overhead vents. For the price you pay to go there I expected much better!

I dined alone and upon arrival was given a 20 minute wait time, turned out to be 30 but I was famished and committed. No big deal, I waited.
The restaurant had a very busy dinner rush and the staff was noticeably moving around with a purpose and also provided their apologies for the wait.
Considering the situation, I ordered what I perceived as the easier menu items, Candied Bacon and “The Beast” burger. Admittedly, both were a let down, especially the bacon.
The bacon came out COLD and baked way too long, like made in the morning and sat around all day cold. The “candied” part was far from that and consisted of just sprinkling of brown sugar. The presentation was nothing short of poor. The portion was considerable but definitely did not outweigh the other factors…. But, I ate it because once again, I was famished (8hrs of travel here) and I had no idea when or if I’d get something else in a reasonable time considering the busy atmosphere.
The burger wasn’t cooked to my liking. I asked for medium rare because of the meats involved and how dry they can turn out, but I received a medium to medium well. It also did not taste anything like the description. The sweet potato fries (side) was the shining star and the dip was complementing.
I would not order either item again.
The best part of the evening was the staff. Especially the hostess, who was seemingly doing more than hostess duties. I seen her clear tables, bring chairs from upstairs to make table seating, get water, refill waters and she also got my check for me. It’s not to say the others weren’t doing anything, but the young lady was certainly putting in work.
I’d slightly consider giving this place another try if nothing else was open but most certainly would not be during any busy period.
I really wanted to like it, but it left so much room for improvement.

I recognize that my group and I are tourists. We don't know the area. We walked in about 1:00 on a Friday, it's not busy. Maybe one or two other tables. We have an event two doors down at 2:30, and so we chose a place not busy.
It took at least 10 minutes for anyone to come over and talk to us. Once they did, we noticed how long things were taking. Ten minutes or so each time. When our waitress came with our sodas, we let her know that we had to be a few doors down at 2:30. She said no problem, they weren't busy. We ordered then. We kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting. At 2:00, about 40 or so minutes after we ordered, we just reminded her we had to be a few doors down at 2:30. She said, no problem, yours is the next to come out. So we went ahead and asked for the bill so we could get out quick. She brought out the bill 15 minutes later, and we paid. No food. We're waiting, waiting, waiting. At literally 2:30 our food finally comes out. It's fine, but certainly not worth a 90 minute wait. It's especially annoying when you're pressed for time.
We won't be going back here the next time we're at New Bern for a vacation.
