I met up with friends at Chapel Hill's Bartaco, looking forward to catching up over a nice dinner experience. But, Bartaco entirely missed the mark. The staff expected us to use their QR code system to order and pay. While I understand this is very convenient for restaurants, there is still a portion of consumers (over 45% according to William Blair Equity Research) who aren't comfortable ordering and paying via their mobile phones. In fact, two of us planned to use cash. They don't accept it. We ended up using pencil and paper menu forms to order and credit cards to pay. They seemed put out that we were asking them to interact with us (aka working as wait staff). The condescension we experienced was palpable and not very welcoming. What about the meal? While the Baja fish taco and pork belly taco were good, the portions were skimpy. The crab taco (the special) had a strange taste and texture. After four tacos, I left hungry. The 6-oz Bartaco margarita seemed overpriced for $12.50, but you be the judge. To summarize, my main concern about this experience is the attempted shaming we received for not playing along and the time spent dickering over how to order versus enjoying a meal with friends.

It was just a regular Saturday as I wandered around North Hills. all of a sudden the rain pours down I was blindly running around, finding a place out of the storm and stumbled into a restaurant. A restaurant I didn’t know what alter the course of my life. It gave me life. That restaurant was.… Bartaco. Little did I know at the time that I was missing out on this incredible experience. From the taco, to the guac, to the tea, Bartaco has changed me in ways I never thought possible. Thank you Bartaco… Thank you.

Excellent chow and even better customer service. Wait staff and the manager came to our table to help my vegetarian/no-salt partner find something she could order, and it all worked out spectacularly. Fantastic wait service throughout and the food was equally good, especially the hot sauces. Thank you for listening to us and making accommodations for our special diner.

I have wanted to try Bartaco for quite a while and decided to go today for my birthday lunch. Sadly, it's fine. It all started awkwardly with the QR code and not-so-user-friendly ordering process on a phone. I just prefer talking with a person and not a table of people looking at phones. My food was fine but not so great that I feel the need to go back any time soon. I'm kinda bummed because I had high hopes. (One major issue is it's sort a dead area for cell service. I (along with others I saw at tables) couldn't get the website to load to order because I had no service. I did connect to the wifi but it was just all clunky and a poor start to lunch. )

Amazing food at a beautiful place! The place is cozy and well decorated. Nice service and the best tacos. Food is delicious and presented in a stylistic way on aluminum trays. The drinks are also well done. I loved the tuna tacos wrapped in lettuce.

My husband and I chose to eat here for lunch after checking out of the hotel and before heading back home to SC. Glad we did! We sat at the bar. Christine was so helpful with our food choices. Their drinks were delicious - no processed mixers, everything was freshly squeezed. Enjoyed our margarita and mimosa. The food was fabulous. Delicious tacos. Yes, they are on the smaller size like most authentic street tacos but you'll find that's all you need. Guac, salsa roja and street corn were delicious too. Very happy leaving this establishment. Will be back again when we are in town.

Best Restaurant in Town I thought I was in Mexico. You need to try Tacos here you won't Believe it, This was the best Experience in North Carolina Raleigh. Great Team and Thank you

Food was ok, $10 for chips and guacamole that is free at most Mexican restaurants was not a good start. You have to order everything by their app, which is kind of stupid if you are sitting in a restaurant. Taco’s were small, too much breading on the fish, shrimp was ok, Pork belly was very good. My wife’s loved her Margarita and the beer was cold. Over priced for tacos.

This is a unique restaurant with not-your-typical Mexican fare. It is fresh and delicious. You have to scan a QR code for the menu and ordering as well as payment. They do have a card you can put on a clip if you need any assistance. Server explained everything and transactions were relatively easy to understand. You do have to enter your credit card before placing your order and then confirm payment after you meal. Very efficient and a great idea, especially during the pandemic. I actually ordered from the children's menu at the server's recommendation. If you aren't real hungry, it's a great option and serving sizes are decent. My only negative is they only have one option for chicken tacos and it is spicy.

My husband and I met my nephew, his wife, and my cousin for an enjoyable lunch at Bartaco. We sat outside. The contactless service might be alienating to some, but I wasn't bothered by it. We were able to leave after we had paid easily. I ordered several tacos, all very good. I think the fried oyster was the best. All my companions ate bowls which they enjoyed too. I definitely recommend.

We had lunch at Bartaco Raleigh today while shopping at North Hills. Bartaco is located where the Mura sushi restaurant used to be. They have a really nice decor and the entire menu and ordering experience is done via your phone. I didn’t ask but I’m sure they could accommodate someone without a phone or who isn’t tech savvy. Their street tacos are very good especially the pork belly tacos. They also make a great mojito. We really enjoyed ourselves. The staff is very friendly too!

Had an amazing first meal on Saturday at bartaco. First experience doing cash-less restaurant and the app and payment was easy to understand and use. We enjoyed several of the tacos--pork belly and oyster were our favorites and my cocktail of Smoke On The Water was a great accompaniment. I can't recall our server's name but he was very professional, very knowledgeable, and very friendly. He checked several times to make sure we had what we needed and didn't have further questions. Also answered my question about other restaurant suggestions like a champ-much appreciated! We have added bartaco to our must-do again next Raleigh trip list. Thanks for an amazing first experience!

Much to my surprise, when I met a friend for lunch recently at Bartaco I was informed that everything was now "contactless." This meant that they make no provision to pay with cash and you will have to provide personal data in order to dine there. So, other than someone bringing out the food to your table, there was no contact with wait staff. Honest question: Does this mean that there's no need to tip because the goal is no actual personal interaction? Bottom line: I not only had to scan the QR code to see the menu, I had to order via my phone--AND PAY UPFRONT, which meant I HAD to give them my credit card info and phone number to complete the transaction (I had planned to pay with cash). Awkwardly, when my order came out wrong, they were forced to actually engage with me in person, which seemed to annoy the staff. Mind you, this happened before the current COVID surge in early-July, so nobody was wearing masks, and there were no restrictions anywhere. And it was outdoor dining. When I complained to the management and asked what they planned to do once COVID ended, I was made to feel like an out-of-touch, old fogey. I simply asked would they return to a situation where one could at least pay with cash? Or what about some sort of hybrid situation in which patrons who wanted a touchless experience could have it and those who didn't weren't forced to turn over their personal data? They said no, that this is how will be going forward. So I told them I will never come back and they just lost a customer. Beware of what is clearly a rigid and an unresponsive management structure that says "my way or the highway" and seems to have little interest in making ALL customers feel welcomed and accommodated.

I love the food at Bar Taco! However, the ordering ordeal totally spoiled my lunch experience. To have to order and pay on line, and enter my credit card while I was trying to enjoy my visit with a friend was totally annoying. The manager and server to whom I expressed my displeasure did their best to try to convince me how I great it was… I felt like my food was delivered by a human vending machine….poor experience!
